POLL: Closing South Willow Street for Esplanade Project

Kent Patch broke the news Friday that Kent State University is studying the idea of closing a portion of South Willow Street in the neighborhood west of campus. Ultimately, city officials will have the final say as to whether the section of the street between College Avenue and Main Street is closed for the Esplanade extension, which has seen Kent State spend more than $9 million on 43 properties for the project since at least 2007. The new leg of the Esplanade, the on-campus section of The Portage Bike and Hike Trail, is under construction in the neighborhood and will link campus to downtown. This new section will cut directly across South Willow Street. Kent State owns every property but one lining both sides of South Willow Street …

Road Closure for Kent Drivers Starts Wednesday

Hudson Road in Franklin Township to close for more than 1 month

Kent drivers who use Hudson Road in Franklin Township to get to and from the city will have to find another route for more than a month starting Wednesday. Franklin Township officials will close Hudson Road between Ravenna Road and Newton Drive, starting Wednesday, for roadway improvement and repaving. The road closure is expected to last until Sept. 15. The work includes improving two vertical curves for proper sight distance, some roadway widening, a full depth rebuilding of the roadway base where necessary and improving of the roadway drainage, according to township officials. Local traffic will be maintained. The posted detour route is is Ravenna Road to Seasons Road and then to Judson Road.

South Lincoln to Close on Monday

Week-long closure expected for portion of road

A portion of South Lincoln Street will close for about five days starting Monday. City officials will close the section of South Lincoln Street between Summit Street and School Street in order to conduct underground utility work. Residents of that portion of the street will have access to their houses via School Street. Detour signs will be posted. The road is expected to remain closed from Monday through Friday, July 20.

Middlebury Road Closes Wednesday for Water Main Work

Road to close from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays

Middlebury Road will be closed between Munroe Falls-Kent Road and Akron Boulevard to through traffic  beginning Wednesday, June 20. The closing will be from 7am to 6pm weekdays. Middlebury Road will  be re­opened weekday evenings and weekends. Local traftic will be maintained as well as emergency vehicle trafñc. It is suggested that local traffic take Munroe Falls­Kent Road to Akron Boulevard. Delays should be expected during the construction, and alternate routes should be used when possible. The project is scheduled for completion by September 2012.

Water Street to Close Sunday Downtown

Overnight closure for water main work

A portion of South Water Street will close downtown this weekend for water main construction. South Water Street, between College Avenue and Main Street, will close Sunday starting at 4 p.m. The section of road is scheduled to reopen by 7 a.m. Monday, June 4. Access to businesses will be maintained during the road closure, but no on-street parking or through traffic will be permitted. The city recommended detour is to use Franklin Avenue to get to College Street from either Main or Summit streets.

UPDATE: Erie Street Closes Tuesday for the Summer

Road reconstruction part of downtown redevelopment work

Editor's note: this story has been updated as initially it incorrectly stated Erie Street would be closed to pedestrian traffic during construction. Erie Street will close downtown starting Tuesday for a little more than two months so its surface can be completely reconstructed as part of the downtown redevelopment work. The section of road that will close is between South Water and South DePeyster streets. The closure is expected to last until at least Aug. 15. During this closure, the road will be closed to car traffic and no parking will be permitted on Erie Street, but pedestrian access will be maintained to businesses as well as access to the drive-thru at Tree City Coffee. No Parking on Erie Starting Wednesday

Street parking will be closed for water main construction

A week-long closure of parking on Erie Street downtown starts Wednesday. Construction on a water main will force the closing of Erie Street between South DePeyster and South Water streets for at least a week, but city officials say parking may be available during the evenings after construction work ends for the day. Parking will be available during the weekend, and the road is expected to reopen on May 9. Local traffic will be maintained on Erie Street during the water main construction. Free, long-term parking is available a few blocks away on Franklin Avenue.

Crain Avenue Bridge Reopens Today

The Crain Avenue bridge opened up to traffic again today after being closed since July 20. Kent City Engineer Jim Bowling said construction went according to plan and thanked residents for their patience. "We appreciate everyone's patience in enduring this project," Bowling said. Reminder: Crain Avenue Bridge Closes Today

The bridge will be closed to traffic until July 25

The Crain Avenue Bridge closes to traffic today so construction crews can finish work to raise the ABC Railroad tracks, which cross the bridge's eastern landing point. this sucks. seems like it's taking forever to get this bridge project done, and there is no easy way to get downtown from lake st. the light at crain bridge and mantua/43 already takes quite a long time to change for all the re directed traffic. now we can't go that way....why is this project so slow to complete?   more ›
