Second Kent Citizens Police Academy still taking applications for February start
Slots are still open for residents to enroll in the second Kent Citizens Police Academy run by the Kent Police Department. Applications to attend are on the police department's website. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a Kent-area resident without any felony convictions, any misdemeanor convictions within the past two years or any pending misdemeanor charges. The second, 12-week academy will start in February. The first academy's goal was to give its members sort of a behind-the-scenes look at the police department and to foster relationships with residents in Kent's neighborhoods. First class a success; Kent may only hold one more in 2012
Kent Police officials are happy with the outcome of the department's first-ever Citizens Police Academy, but the program may not continue beyond 2012. A U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance made the program possible, but the grant will be exhausted after the department's 2012 academy ends. "If we can continue it, we will,” Kent Police Chief Michelle Lee said. "Right now, we're looking at the second class as it for now." The first-ever citizens police academy finished its 12-week course this week
Members of the first-ever Kent Citizens Police Academy attended their last of 12 weekly classes this week at the Kent Police Department. The cadets learned about the behind-the-scenes operations of the department during the academy, which started this summer. Their final class was Thursday. Read about the classes below:

Citizen's Police Academy gets lesson on animal, parking enforcement
The number of dogs impounded at Kent's kennel has dropped every year for the past 16 years. That annual drop is a trend Kent's compliance officer, Dana Frasier, attributes to responsible residents — and strong enforcement of the city's animal laws. Frasier gave an overview of his job with the Kent Police Department handling animal and parking issues to the Citizen's Police Academy Thursday as part of the group's second session. Dog program a success Frasier started his job managing animal complaints for the city 16 years ago, and in that first year he impounded 216 dogs. The next year, that number fell to about 186.
