Pro Gun Group Cites Kent Shops Welcoming, Opposed to Firearms

NEO Carry recently held an open-carry gun demonstration in downtown Kent

NEO Carry, a recently established pro-gun group in Northeast Ohio, is advising members and other Ohio residents who carry guns what businesses they can and cannot carry their weapons into. The group, which recently held an open-carry demonstration in downtown Kent, has listed dozens of businesses — including many Kent shops — on its website advising which allow people to carry guns on their premises and those that prohibit firearms. Here are the Kent businesses flagged by NEO Carry as either prohibiting firearms or welcoming people who carry openly or have concealed carry weapon permits: According to NEO Carry, businesses listed as "gun friendly" on their website were identified as such because there are no "Guns Prohibited" signs posted …

Not in downtown Kent, no. How about downtown Akron or Cleveland? I don' have a gun or a CC permit, but I fully support gun rights. The stats on CC permit holders show them to commit gun crime at lower rates than law enforcement officers or thegeneral public, so I have no problem respecting their right to carry a gun.   more ›

Multiple Businesses on West Main Closing, Moving

Redevelopment opportunities on the horizon for vacant commercial spaces

Downtown Kent is booming, but just a few miles west of the city's central business district another commercial corridor isn't exactly thriving. Several businesses flanking Kent's auto dealers on West Main Street have closed, moved or announced a forthcoming closure in the past two years. Businesses that have closed or moved include: Main Street Tavern, which closed in the summer of 2011; TLC Liquor, which shut down this month; Firehouse Grille, one of several restaurants to open and close in the same location; and a branch of Huntington Bank that closed last year Add to that list Dalton's Furniture, which announced earlier this year the store is going out of business after its remaining stock is sold, and at least five businesses on West …

Kent people need to start shopping in Portage County. I wish that all the retail was in Kent, but the big stores that keep people shopping regularly are in Streetsboro and Brimfield. Kent's tax structure has made it an unwelcome place for national retailers and restaurants. So, if people are determined to shop and dine at those places, then at least support your county instead of Summit. ...and …   more ›

Businesses React to Fairchild Bridge Opening

The 2-year construction project has encircled several small businesses in Kent

Ask a few Kent business owners what they think of the new Fairchild Avenue Bridge opening and you're going to get some varied responses. The two-year construction project, which has about another year to go before finished, has encircled several small businesses in the area whose customers have had to face detours and difficulty accessing the business. Ryan Brannon and Mike Mistur, owners of Bent Tree Coffee Roasters, which opened during construction, are excited to see the bridge open. "We were at a dead end," Brannon said, referring to North Water Street's closure at Brady Street a few hundred feet from their front door. "Now that traffic flows freely, we're excited." At Weiss Motors and Knapp's Collission, owner Bob Knapp has watched …

Bridge Work Affects Businesses Surrounded by Street Closings

Construction on Fairchild Avenue Bridge will affect area businesses well into September

April showers may bring May flowers, but the downside is that they also extend the amount of time North Mantua Street businesses must deal with decreased patronage as motorists weave between orange barrels. Lane reductions on North Mantua Street, (aka S.R. 43), started April 4 for what was supposed to be a three-week work period. However, Mother Nature intervened. Kent City Engineer Jim Bowling said Friday that "an ungodly amount of rain in that three-week period" has caused construction delays that will keep those North Mantua Street barrels in place for a bit longer. "We’re looking at another week, two at most," Bowling said. "By mid-May it will go back to five lanes." The work is part of an ongoing $23 million project to replace the …

Sheetz is the problem. What makes the construction terrible is the people illegally turning into and out of Sheetz! I agree Pat, the cops really need to be at this intersection, there are people always running the red lights, and illegally turning into and out of sheetz. I have been calling Jim Bowling the city engineer 330-678-8106 to complain about the sheetz problem, and the police 330-673-…   more ›

Businesses Coming to Acorn Alley II Announced

A Mediterranean restaurant, gourmet popcorn shop and gift store will be among the new tenants

Developer Ron Burbick said Wednesday that retail space in the second phase of his successful Acorn Alley downtown development is “100 percent sold out” and that he has serious buyers lined up for most of the second-floor luxury condominiums being built. Burbick shared details of Acorn Alley II’s progress with alumni of Leadership Portage County who had gathered at The Tannery. The communications business, operated in partnership with Kent State University, is located on the second floor of the original Acorn Alley. Outside, construction workers had just finished a day that included erecting steel framing for Acorn Alley II on Erie Street. The new structure is being built parallel to Main Street, but perpendicular to the existing Acorn …
