For several years, our family waited and saved to be able to live in this traditional middle class residential family neighborhood a block away from Walls Elementary School in Kent. The quiet, tree lined streets, single family homes and safe, short walk to the elementary school has always attracted families with young children. Senior citizens who raised their children decades ago continue to live here because of the quality of our neighborhood. It's such a quiet neighborhood, that Walls schoolchildren serve as crossing guards before and after school with no adult supervision. Now this traditional family neighborhood is threatened by the proposal to change 40 years of residential zoning so that a towing, trucking, auto repair and storage …

Dear Elizabeth Howard (Chair of the Kent Board of Zoning Appeals): On June 18, 2012, your board will meet to consider an application for a zoning variance by Mr. Aubrey Baker, owner of [apparently] several different automotive-related companies for a property owned by Mr. Tim Crock. The application will relate to certain changes at a business he proposes to relocate to 634 Lake Street, Kent, Ohio 44240-2647. That address is in near proximity to a house my wife and I own on Harvey Street. I am sure that you and the other members of the board appreciate our anxiety at this point. While his business was previously located for a couple of years on the old Gougler-Furukawa property just diagonally across the street, the new location (originally…

Kent council members urge compromise, ask for patience as proposal works through zoning process
Residents of Miller Avenue, Steele and Harvey streets gathered Wednesday to voice concerns about a towing company's proposed relocation adjacent to their back yards. Kirk and Rosa Noden opened their home to about 30 neighborhood residents to share thoughts and concerns about Baker's Towing & Auto Repair's plans to move from 667 Lake St. to 638 Lake St. After about an hour, in a show-of-hands vote the residents agreed they didn't want to see any incarnation of the towing or repair business a stone's throw from their back yards. "We seem to be in agreement ... we are opposed to Baker's Towing," Kirk Noden said. Among the concerns voiced by residents about the proposed move were: late night and early morning noise from the towing operation; …

Baker's Towing and Repair subject of petition from nearby residents
A group of homeowners are asking city officials to stop a towing company from relocating across Lake Street into their neighborhood. Residents of Miller Avenue, Steele and Harvey streets are circulating a petition against Baker's Towing and Repair, the owner of which plans to relocate the towing and auto repair operation across Lake Street and a few hundred feet west from its existing location. The previous location on the north side of Lake Street was surrounded by large industrial companies as part of the former Gougler Industries complex. The new location is surrounded by houses. Steele Street resident Kirk Noden is circulating petitions to gather signatures of area residents who also oppose the company's move. Noden said, in a letter …
