Two men have been charged with teasing one of the Kent Police Department K9 officers in a span of two days. Gage B. Daniel, 22, of 2523 Meloy Road, was arrested Sunday and charged with harassing one of the department's police dogs. Daniel was charged with a second-degree misdemeanor for allegedly teasing the dog outside Water Street Tavern. According to Daniel's criminal complaint, he was charged with recklessly teasing or striking a police dog. Fahad Alajlan, 21, of 185 Currie Hall Parkway, was charged with the same offense hours earlier on Saturday near the AMETEK building downtown at 100 E. C.J. Steward has been fired from his job, charged and indefinitely suspended from the Golden Flashes for allegedly assaulting a woman.
A Kent State football player has been suspended indefinitely from the team for allegedly grabbing a co-worker by the arm, pushing her into a door and damaging her TV, kentwired.com reports. Senior linebacker C.J. Steward was arrested Feb. 15 and has been charged with misdemeanor assault and property damage. The brief scuffle reportedly occurred at The Province apartments -- located at 609 S. Lincoln St. -- and Steward has been fired for his alleged connection to the incident. A Kent woman has been charged with breaking into another Kent woman's apartment and assaulting her, according to Kent Police. Officers arrested Julie A. McCaffery, 23, of 1093 S. Lincoln St., and charged her with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, and assault, a first-degree misdemeanor. McCaffery was charged with breaking into a residence in the 1500 block of Stratford Drive off Summit Street on Friday. Police arrested McCaffery later that day. She was scheduled to be released on a personal recognizance bond Tuesday after being arraigned, according to Portage County court records. No pretrial hearing has been set on the charges.

A Streetsboro woman and a Cleveland man are facing assault charges following two separate, late-night incidents in Kent. Dana L. Calo, 34, of Streetsboro, was charged with assault, a first-degree misdemeanor, and criminal damaging, a second-degree misdemeanor, following a fight just after midnight on Franklin Avenue, according to Kent Police. Calo was charged with assaulting Kenneth R. Weybrecht at 440 Fairchild Ave. on July 22, according to Portage County court records. She pleaded not guilty to the assault charge Thursday in Portage County Municipal Court Judge Barb Oswick's courtroom. Her trial is scheduled to start Aug. 2. Thomas P. Shirley M. Van Horn, 54, arrested on burglary charge
A Kent woman has been charged with burglary and assaulting a Kent Police officer. Shirley M. Van Horn, 54, of 250 S. River St., apartment C13, was arrested Sunday and charged with burglary, a second-degree felony. While Van Horn was being held at the Kent Police Department she assaulted Kent Police detention officer Keith Cooper, according to Portage County court records. The assault happened in the detention facility at the police station on South Water Street. The assault charge is a fifth-degree felony. Police arrrested Van Horn at her home Sunday afternoon for breaking into a neighboring apartment at 250 S. River St. earlier that day. Amelia Jones, 23, of Cuyahoga Falls, and two others have been imprisoned for violently beating three women in Kent on Jan. 8.
After pleading guilty in April to felonious assault charges, Amelia Jones, 23, of Cuyahoga Falls, and Angela Tavernaris, 24, of Akron, have been sentenced to prison. The charges stemmed from a January assault in Kent. Jones, who was sentenced June 8 by Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie Pittman, received three years in prison, reports the Falls News Press. Tavernaris, sentenced June 4, got four years. Each was fined $350. The women, who were accompanied by Alfonso Chionchio, 24, of Kent, were arrested after attacking three women in the 500 block of Franklin Avenue. Roosevelt student charged with assault A student at Theodore Roosevelt High School faces an assault charge after hitting another student at the school, according to a Kent police report. Officers charged Kyle D. Barber, 18, of Kent, Feb. 3 after a fight at the school.
