2007 Kent Roosevelt grad died one year ago today serving in Afghanistan
Editor's note: this story was updated at 9 a.m. May 29, 2012. One year after he died, Adam Hamilton's home town dedicated a portion of the street in front of the high school where he excelled on so many levels in his memory. Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala declared a portion of North Mantua Street in front of Theodore Roosevelt High School and Standing Rock Cemetery, where Hamilton was laid to rest last year, a memorial in honor of the 22-year-old who was the first Kent resident to die while serving in Afghanistan. The dedication, which took place in the midst of Kent's Memorial Day parade, included an unveiling of a sign declaring the road a memorial to Hamilton. Hamilton's father, Scott, said Adam loved his home town and thanked those who …

It is nice that you made this dedication, but Spc Hamilton was killed doing a job he joined up to do, but the city of Kent has not honored the many of Kent residents that were drafted and made to go to vietnam. The men that were drafted and sent to fight and die in a war that not every one thought the U.S. should have been in, are not honored. This seems a little out of place, the men that had no…   more ›
SPC Crossfit hosts annual fitness event to support Adam Hamilton scholarship fund
Paying tribute to our veterans on Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a tough holiday to celebrate, but that's what many of us will do this weekend whether it be with a cookout or by taking a short vacation to celebrate the start of summer. Think about that first word: memorial. America was born fighting a war. In war, people die. It's a sad fact. From 1775 to 1991, almost 42 million Americans served during wartime and 1,190,085 died in service during that time, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Fast forward to the "Global War on Terrorism," which has been marked since Oct. 7, 2001 — the day we attacked al Qaeda in Afghanistan — and 54,695 men and women have died as of May 21, 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. That's 1,244,780 brothers and sisters, fathers…

Kent Patch is republishing the editor's picks for top stories of 2011 this week with brief updates.
Editor's Note: this year the Kent community lost native son and Theodore Roosevelt High School grad Adam Hamilton to the war in Afghanistan. Below is one of the original stories, republished today as one of the editor's picks for top stories of 2011. Rather than republish the breaking story, we wanted to run a piece with friends comments remembering Hamilton. June 1, 2011 By Alison Matas Jordan Cottrell first met Adam Hamilton at basic training. “We were marching in formation, and Adam and I ended up next to each other,” Cottrell said. “We were the two loudest people there, and from then on, we were best friends.” Shortly after basic training ended, Cottrell, who is from Finlayson, MN, took a trip to Kent to meet Hamilton’s family. “I …
