Adults to Join in Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Event planned for adults Friday, children's egg hunt is Saturday

Adults will get the chance to hunt for candy and prize-filled eggs this year as part of Kent's annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Kent Parks and Recreation Department is holding an adult egg scramble Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Fred Fuller Park. Participants must be 18 or older. For the adult event, the cost is $10 and participants will get to use a flashlight to hunt in the dark for eggs. The eggs are filled with prize tickets for some big-ticket items, including: a bicycle from Portage Cyclery a tablet via PC Surgeons; a Cleveland Cavaliers hat autographed by Tristan Thompson; concert tickets to the Kent Stage and more. Kent's Tax Rate for 2013 Rises Slightly

Here are the numbers that make up your property tax bill this year

Kent's tax rate will rise by almost 3 mills this year, according to data provided by The Plain Dealer and the Ohio Department of Taxation. Homeowners in Kent will pay $2,100 for every $100,000 in home value this year, up from $2,017 last year, according to the database posted on Cleveland.com. Overall millage stands at 68.57 this year, compared with 65.86 in 2012. That's an increase of 2.71 mills. The increase represents a roughly $83 rise compared with last year. The Kent City Schools get the largest share, with 49.38 mills costing $1,512 per $100,000 valuation. The city gets the next-highest amount, or $281. Bethany: who's trying to PUNISH who? That is such a telling statement to me that you- or anyone- would associate not wanting a raise in taxes as a PUNISHMENT to someone/something else. why can't it just be: we don't have the money. no punishment/ reward involved.   more ›

While Lincoln leading the way with 12 nominations — including Best Picture, Best Director for Steven Spielberg, Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, Best Supporting Actress for Sally Field and Best Supporting Actor for Tommy Lee Jones — wasn't a huge surprise, there are always some surprises when the nominees are named. One of the surprises this year is that directors of three big films — Kathryn Bigelow of Zero Dark Thirty, Ben Affleck of Argo and Quentin Tarantino of Django Unchained — did not receive nominations for Best Director. City Manager: 2013 Budget 'Frustrating'

Kent City Council approves proposed operating budget for next year in committee

Another year and another deficit is forecast for the city of Kent's budget despite rising income tax revenue. Kent City Council voted to approve the city's 2013 proposed operating budget in committee this month, and like recent years it forecasts a more than $1 million budget deficit by year's end. Kent City Manager Dave Ruller called the $46.7 million budget "frustrating" for its restraint on city services, but he said the budget also honors commitments to provide services to residents. Ruller said the city's annual budget theme has changed little since he came to Kent seven years ago, and it's been a theme of continual cost cuts.
