Please, committee, don't wait to let the community "see" potential presidents until the…Read More DAY YOU NAME HER OR HIM. It starts the presidency on the wrong tone and frankly...it's illegal in Ohio. At least the last two candidates. By then, their institutions have to know they are candidates. Transparency. Try for it. Thnx

at over 400,00.00 per year let the next president pay for his own place.
David Reith May 19, 2013 at 09:12 pm
I personally think a college president should live on campus, visible and available. And what if…Read More the next man or woman doesn't like the place? The old place on Main street is perfect.

These local elections can have as much of an impact on our daily lives as the bigger elections. Not…Read More sure why more people don't' vote. I'm glad the levy passed. We have excellent schools and we need to keep it that way.
Deacon Mike May 14, 2013 at 12:10 am
It is rather sad that people just don't care enough to vote....how can you claim a demand by the…Read More voters...when some 66% didn't vote? This school levy passed not with a mandate of the populous, but with handful of people setting the course of action for the entire city....If anyone complains about higher taxes...shame on them...they are obviously nothing more than slackers,,,, pawns in the game of life...

I can see why people don't want to vote in the national elections seems like a waste a time but…Read More local elections as you can see by the turnout 1 votecan make a difference.

Hey! All that new business in Kent and we the property owners have to make up for all the over…Read More generous abatements that our politicians gave to those developers. What about increasing the state sales tax a small percentage and distributing those funds according to the number of pupils in each school district, that I think would be more fair and lessen the burden on property owners. I personally think a university president should live on campus and be visible to and available to…Read More students. Check and see what the Miami University's president's house looks like and where it is. And should Kent State get another president, is he or she locked into the house where the Leftons are now? What will it cost to break the lease? I would want, as KSU president, to live in the old presidential house, have campus security, and be part of the scene.

fillerup - that was Burbick's doing in downtown Kent... and tax payers.
FillerUp April 4, 2013 at 12:37 pm
Sa;;y - there has also been a lot of help from Lefton as well. The hotel and conference center has…Read More nothing to do with Burbick. Don't get me wrong, Ron has done a lot, but the redevelopment of downtown Kent been with the help Ron Burbick (the catalyst), Dave Ruller and Lester Lefton. Yes the tax payers as well.

Glad to see that 17% of Kent citizens were able to muster the energy to bother voting, and that the…Read More majority of those few supported this very important issue. Congrats to the District for making the convincing argument.
It's pretty clear that the chorus of "NO" that exists here on Patch is not representative of the majority.

"The student-athlete experience." Why not put the money toward just "the student…Read More experience." Isn't that what centers of leaning are supposed to be about? I have always thought that state supported universities were here to enable the non-elite of society to obtain a college education. A "Locker Room project." Imagine! How many millions?

In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reports that a "moderate"…Read More college budget for an in-state public college for the 2012–2013 academic year averaged $22,261. A moderate budget at a private college averaged $43,289.

Kent State is in the middle of the Ohio average. Public and private combined. Ohio is an expensive state because of the traditionally low state funding, which was slashed even further in the past 2 years. Bottom line, no matter where you go in Ohio it is expensive. If people can't afford it they need to go outside of Ohio. I came from Missouri and they have great schools that are very affordable. The cost of running a university there is lower because the state contributes more. If Kent State looks too expensive for you then chances are you just can't afford to go to a good school in Ohio and you might want to go to another state. Indecently, Washington DC had a 125% rise in average tuition.(see source sited above) It could be much worse.

On balance, Lester did more good than harm, and I don't begrudge him his salary (although the…Read More bonuses seem a little excessive). As mentioned above, you want talent you gotta pay for it, and KSU is important enough to need a talented head. I think he's prickly, I think he saw students as expendable "consumers" rather than the reason for KSU's existence, and I think he treated the faculty and staff with disdain, but, I also think he did what he was asked, which was to raise money and the U's profile. Let's give him his due and move on. I hope for better.
