Just FYI, this was the 44th annual concert, not the 43rd. The first one was in 1970 and the 40th wasRead More celebrated in 2009. It's the 43rd *anniversary* of the first one, but the 44th in order.

It's great that someone at the Cleveland Heights Patch is doing theatre reviews, but why aren't theyRead More reviewing the productions at theatres actually located IN Cleveland Heights with a rich history to this community: Ensemble Theatre at the old Coventry Elementary School on Washingon Blvd has been around since 1979 and Dobama Theatre on Lee Rd has been around even longer, since 1959. Not to mention the professional produced summer musical and concert series at Cain Park which will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary this summer.

Hi Jonathan! Thanks for the feedback. Amanda is a blogger whose work is shared regionally on severalRead More Patch sites and who writes about the whole region. But you're absolutely right - I would love for someone to blog about our rich local theatre scene! It's free and anyone can do it - go to clevelandheights.patch.com/blogs_apply.

The size of the N is the size of the N. It's the size in the typeface Neutraface by HouseRead More Industries, a widely regarded well made typeface. http://www.houseind.com/fonts/neutraface The rest of your complaints are superficial and subjective, so I'll leave them be, though I don't agree with them.

The logo in the picture is not the full logo. Click on the beacon journal article to get the fullRead More logo and explanation. More than anything its silly to put much stock in a design logo, there all very subjective. Logos dont make something, experiences do. The kent library has to offer different experiences to users, and from that, they will get more community involvement.

I rather like the large N. It makes me think of "New" and "Neat" andRead More "Nice" and will, hopefully anyway, help me to forget that I will be paying a hundred fifty bucks or so per year in my property taxes, until the day I die, for the charming building that was obviously designed by a committee that couldn't agree. Am I complaining? Not on your life! I use the library all the time, and viewed from the parking lot in the back, it looks just fine. I guess the committee had a moment of detente. Or is it entente. Or just wanted to wrap it up and go home. To me, in this early hour of the morning when my fertile brain oftimes begins to conger, the right side of the K, which I presume is supposed to represent an open book, looks, with its blue color, like the bill of a cold duck as a cubist, perhaps Cezanne, probably more like Braque, would have seen it. It calls the viewer to come in out of the cold of ignorance, superstition, and quackery, into the warmth of knowledge and learning. I like it. Thank you. And good-night to all you wonderful commenters out there in Patcherland. Keep your personal insults flying. Everyone likes being called an idiot and stupid when they express an opinion, especially when it comes from a person who posts anonymously.

The adult egg hunt sounds like a blast!!
Hope Moskal March 28, 2013 at 01:18 pm
Only children up to age 9? I remember hunting for eggs until I was at least 12. Of course, IRead More believed in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy until I was 16.

It would be nice if someone were to mention something about the Wick family and how the poetryRead More center came to be.
David Hassler March 15, 2013 at 01:09 pm
There is a nice description on the "About" tab of the Wick Poetry Center's websiteRead More (www.kent.edu/wick) regarding the origins of the Wick Center and the incredible generosity of the brothers Robert and Walter Wick who founded it in 1984 in memory of their sons Stan and Tom. David Hassler
Chris (Kit) Myers March 15, 2013 at 01:35 pm
Thanks for providing the website information re the poetry center. It's hard to believe that it wasRead More established almost thirty years ago. Time sure flies! Robert (I knew him as Bob), in addition of his wonderful artistic talents, could really throw a baseball. Back in the 1960's we walked over to the front lawn of Roosevelt (now Davey Elementary) and I tried to catch him. One pitch and I said "That's it!"

Merle was a really special guy -- when I was a kid I always wanted to get struck by lightening,Read More because I thought it would make me good at writing poems!

Hi Barbara, I just came across "Spite" in my Dad's files. I'm guessing this is the one,Read More about 10 lines or so. As soon as I have a chance to get it typed in I'll get it posted. For anyone that would be interested, I've created a Facebook page to use as a way to share his works. If you search FB for Merle Mollenkopf you'll find.

My brother was also an artist. There was time when he had his sketch pad and colored pencils withRead More him and if it interested him he would stop &sketch ...Then move on. Merle had a lead role in the ninth grade Christmas operetta and help paint a mural in our junior high cafeteria. Also HE entertained at parties doing his MAGIC. Merle was so special. IF he didn't leave a mark on you...it wasn't because he didn't TRY.

I always enjoyed seeing Mr. Mollenkopf at Kent's annual "Art in the Park" and listening toRead More his recitation of poems. Several years ago he graciously accepted an invitation to speak to my KSU communication classes and recite poetry. How wonderful that Mr. Noden made two CD audio recordings of Merle's poems for family members.
Mark Mollenkopf March 4, 2013 at 02:33 am
The two CD's are great. Volume 1 has 28 different poems along with some great dialog between my DadRead More and Harry Noden. Volume 2, which was just assembled a couple weeks ago, has 20 tracks. These include "Nomad" and "As Time Churns On" which brought me to tears as I heard his voice once again. The text of these two poems are up on the Merle Mollenkopf facebook page that I just created. I will work with the folks that helped put the CD's together to figure out a good way to make them available to everyone. For sure, we will have copies at the Kent Stage when we have a Celebration of Life for Merle. Date TBD.

It's great that students like Cody Beler engage in research about the shootings at Kent State on MayRead More 4, 1970. One footnote to his YouTube video, which features CSNY's "Ohio" as its soundtrack: evidence shows that the guardsmen did not shoot because they were panicked and didn't know what to do. Everyone can learn more about the shootings in Kent State University's May 4 Visitors Center, www.kent.edu/may4. Keep reflecting on May 4th and telling the story. Laura Davis Kent State
