The Kent State University Liquid Crystal Institute is rooted in the university's chemistry department. The LCI is known historically for its research leading to the establishment of the field of liquid crystals in physics and chemistry. In recent years, the LCI has helped establish two Kent-based liquid crystal technology firms: Kent Displays and AlphaMicron. The 65,000 square-foot Liquid Crystal and Materials Sciences building houses 25 modern research labs and manufacturing equipment.
