Dollar General's merchandise ranges from greeting cards and personal health and beauty items to pet care and frozen foods. Items are an almost even mix of name brands (such as 3M, Clairol and Coke products) and lesser-known or generic brands. Although not a true "dollar" store (not all items are sold for $1), the merchandise here is generally sold at prices that are considerably less than other retailers. The store is much like a modern-day general store, offering a wide variety of basic consumer goods. Brands and selection vary greatly from week to week. The company grew from a single Kentucky store in 1939 to more than 8,000 stores today. Dollar General became a publicly held company in 2009.
