Safety School Class of 2012 Graduates!

About 65 soon-to-be kindergarteners honed safety skills at week-long school run by Kent Junior Mothers.

Numerous graduation exercises are staged each year in Kent, but none are quite as adorable as the ceremony that marks the end of Kent Junior Mothers’ Safety School.

Commencement was held Friday at for about 65 soon-to-be-kindergarteners who spent the week learning vital safety skills regarding stranger awareness, guns, bicycles, buses, cars, water, weather, railroads, fire, playgrounds and more.

The youngsters sported T-shirts in colors representing the elementary schools they will attend this fall: green for , orange for , red for , blue for Walls and and yellow for /CDC.

officers and paramedics/firefighters were among the guest speakers to share life lessons with Safety School attendees. Kids worked on their traffic skills while cruising around an outdoor safety course at Walls on Little Tykes tricycles.

Safety School is Kent Junior Mothers’ largest service project of the year. This year’s coordinators, Kathleen D'Sidocky and Beckie Winterich, were assisted throughout the week by fellow club members and about 30 Kent-area teen volunteers.

More than 2,200 Kent children have participated in Safety School since it began more than 30 years ago.

A non-profit service organization of Kent mothers with children under the age of nine, KJM has deep roots in the Kent community. The club has been in existence since 1945, and is a member of the Kent United Services Organization.

Club activities include volunteering and giving back to kids in the community through events like The Festival of Lights, the Lisa Hawthorne Memorial Service Award and Safety School. KJM also holds fun family events for members and their kids throughout the year.
