Kent Battles Hunger in Competition with Ravenna

Food drive to benefit food cupboards in Ravenna, Kent

Challenge Hunger by supporting Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala, who is encouraging Kent community members to drop off non-perishable food to fill the large yellow truck at on Saturday, March 31.

Mayor Fiala has issued a challenge to Ravenna Mayor Joe Bica to raise as much money and food for the Center of Hope, a food pantry in Ravenna, as Mayor Fiala hopes to see raised for Kent Social Services.

Donations will be accepted and an Open House will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday at Kent Social Services at 1066 S. Water St. The public is invited to stop by and tour the KSS facility and learn about the agency’s services.

Monetary and food donations collected during March and April will be counted toward a challenge grant offered by Alan Shawn Feinstein, a national philanthropist who will add $1 million dollars to local donations raised by food drive programs throughout the country. Kent State University students from the College of Public Health are and are collecting food in the city’s neighborhoods to donate toward the challenge.

Kent Social Services provided more than 9,000 bags of groceries to vulnerable Kent households in 2011. More than 1,000 Kent households who meet the Department of Agriculture’s low-income guidelines are served by KSS. For more information about Kent Social Services, call 33-673-6963.
