Haymaker Mural Needs Volunteers for Prep Work

The is looking for volunteers to help prepare the columns and supports of the Haymaker overpass for .

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday volunteers and market members will be removing paint from the concrete supports of the Haymaker Parkway overpass at the market site on Franklin Avenue.

The paint is being removed to prepare for installation of a mural by Kent artist Elaine Hullihen to celebrate the market and put its stamp on the location. Hullihen will incorporate scenes of the market and Kent’s history throughout the mural to be painted on the columns and lintels of the bridge.

A biodegradable solvent will be applied to the bridge supports Wednesday. Volunteers will be asked to help scrape the old paint off the supports and onto tarps for collection and removal.

Volunteers will be required to wear protective clothing, gloves, goggles and a respirator paint mask.

Haymaker Farmers Market manager Kelly Ferry said Thursday's cleaning is not an appropriate or safe environment for children to take part in the mural project.
