Memorial Day Weekend 'Hammy WOD' Returns to Support Fallen Soldier's Scholarship

Annual exercise fundraiser benefits Adam S. Hamilton Memorial Academic and Athletic Scholarship Fund

Fitness fanatics can celebrate Memorial Day by working out for a worthy cause.

This Sunday marks the 2nd Annual Hammy Workout, a "community workout," in memory of Kent native U.S. Army Spc. Adam S. Hamilton, who died in action in Haji Ruf, Afghanistan, during the 2011 Memorial Day weekend.

The workout, held at Kent State University's Dix Stadium, supports the Adam S. Hamilton Memorial Academic and Athletic Scholarship Fund, which last year provided two $10,000 scholarships to two Theodore Roosevelt High School graduates.

This year's scholarship recipients are Kyle Manning and Anne Kenne.

Scott Hamilton said 180 people have already pre-registered for this year's event in honor of his son.

“Last year was amazing," Hamilton said. "I couldn’t believe we had 260 people do The Hammy."

A 2007 Roosevelt grad, Adam Hamilton was a star athlete in numerous disciplines.

Popular and well-liked, his death gripped the Kent community.

Hundreds turned out for his funeral. Roosevelt lacrosse players dedicated a season in his honor. Last year, the city dedicated the section of North Mantua Street in front of the high school — and the cemetery where he now rests — in his name.

The annual fundraising workout was created with support from SPC Crossfit, the gym where both Adam and Scott Hamilton spent time together.

SPC Crossfit owner Toby Jurging designed the workout to be tailored for all ages. It includes rows, squats, push-ups, sit-ups and other exercises.

This year's event starts at 8 a.m. Sunday with a 5K run and walk followed by The Hammy Workout and a “Li’l Ham” obstacle course for children ages 5-12.

"I was hesitant about adding the 5K," Scott Hamilton said. "Because there are already so many races and other things to do over the holiday weekend, but we have 50 people pre-registered and I expect at least that many to walk-up that day."

You can register online for the Hammy WOD by clicking this link. You can also follow the event page on Facebook.

Certified trainers, equipment, snacks, water and other items will be available courtesy event sponsors including Rogue Fitness, Progenex supplements, CrossFit Cadre in Hudson, SPC in Kent, northeast Ohio Giant Eagle, the Vertical Runner in Hudson, Paleo to Me chef services in Hudson and the Dr Pepper Snapple Group.
