Grill for Good Cooks up $10,000 for Charities

Annual downtown festival supports local non-profit agencies

Grill for Good proved a resounding success this past weekend, as the charity event aimed to raise $6,000 and brought in more than $10,000.

Event organizer Marilyn Sessions said the more than $10,000 raised was the net profit.

“We are thrilled and grateful to all who sponsored, participated, and attended,” she said.

The annual mass cookout brings together professional and non-professional chefs, who cook their treats to raise cash for Coleman Professional Services and Family and Community Services — two non-profits that provide counseling, food pantries and other services to Kent and Portage County residents.

The non-professional chef winners from Saturday’s event were: First Place, College Creamery and Secret Cellar; Second Place, Karen Wise for her strip steak with grilled jalapeños and blue cheese (Karen is the Manager of Davey Resource Group downtown and her sponsor was Dumas Meats); Third Place, the Kent Elks Club with their pulled pork sandwiches.

New Kent eatery Fresco Mexican Grill won the professional voting with their pulled pork tacos, which are topped with lettuce, corn & black bean salsa, cilantro, and a special sauce.
