Walls Elementary Holds 'Race for Education' Fundraiser

Students exercise for a good cause, raise more than $7,000

A new, healthy fundraiser at Walls Elementary School is proving quite successful after bringing in more than $7,000 this fall to support school activities.

The school held the "Race for Education" this month in which students in grades 1 through 5 sought sponsors to support them as they ran laps around the school.

The fundraiser was established by the Walls Elementary Parent Teacher Organization to pay for assemblies, supplies, the 5th grade graduation, spring dance, and other activities.

Kristen Crabtree, secretary for the Walls PTO, said this once-a-year event replaces the previous two or three bake sales, candy bar sales and other fundraisers held throughout the school year.

"We decided to do the Race for Education, a healthy alternative to those other fundraisers," Crabtree said.

She said the students ran a total of 5,176 laps, which equals 575 miles.

"It has been a very productive fundraiser that we hope to continue every year," Crabtree said.
