VIDEO: Kent State Shootings Witness Recalls May 4, 1970

Peter Jedick, author of "Hippies," talks about relationship with student killed by Ohio National Guard

In just a few short days, a flood of memories will come rushing back — like they do for most — for one witness to the May 4, 1970 shootings at .

Peter Jedick, author of the book Hippies, will speak Friday during the university's commemoration of the shootings that killed four students about his relationship with Sandy Scheuer, who was one of the four gunned down 42 years ago.

You can listen to an interview Jedick did with WDOK by following that link. Jedick also wrote about his relationship with Scheuer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2006.

The following events will be held this week on campus to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the shootings:

Kent State University will mark its 42nd annual May 4, 1970, commemoration on May 3 and 4. The commemoration events are an opportunity for students and the community to gather and reflect on the tragedy and adapt the lessons learned to current events.

An activist forum, hosted by the May 4 Task Force student organization, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the Kent Student Center Kiva. Panel speakers include Melba Beals of the “Little Rock Nine;” Sandy Rosen, lawyer for the students in 1977; Howie Emmer, activist activities; and Kent State anthropology professor Mark Seeman, of the May 4 historic site preservation.

The annual candlelight vigil is planned for 10:30 p.m. starting at the Victory Bell on the Kent State Commons on May 3. The walk loops the campus and pays tribute to those wounded and lost on May 4, 1970. Following the walk, people stand at the spots where the four students fell and hold vigil until noon Friday when the commemoration events begin at the Commons.

On Friday, May 4, a book signing of “Democratic Narrative, History, and Memory,” edited by Carole Barbato and Laura Davis, will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the University Bookstore in the Kent Student Center. Barbato, who was a Kent State student in 1970, is a communication studies professor for Kent State University at East Liverpool. Davis, who was a freshman at Kent State when the May 4 events occurred, is an English professor and the university’s faculty coordinator for May 4 initiatives.

The commemoration event, also hosted by the May 4 Task Force, begins at noon, May 4, on the Commons. The Kent Student Center Ballroom will serve as the rain location. This year’s commemoration theme is “Don’t Give Up the Fight!”

Multiple speakers will discuss the effect of May 4 on the Kent State community, as well as college campuses nationwide. The featured speakers include Beth Vild for Allison Krause; Bryan Staul for Jeffrey Miller; Barbato for Sandra Scheuer; Jim Mueller for William Schroeder; Sandford “Sandy” Rosen, attorney for families and victims in 1977; Maia O’Meara, student representing Project Vietnam from Kent Roosevelt High School; Joe Cullum, witness to May 4; Joe Lewis, witness and victim of May 4; Davis; Jon Schluepp, Warriors Journey Home; and Howie Emmer, 1960s activist.

Friday’s itinerary also will consist of the Kent State chronology followed by the ringing of the Victory Bell and tributes to the four deceased students. Melanie Safka will perform the day’s music.

I have a problem when the language of the article is "Sandy Scheuer, who was one of the four gunned down 42 years ago." Noone was "gunned down". they werent stalked and shot while sitting in their homes... The students and other Vigilantes destored half of the town, burnt down the ROTC building, beat up police and firemen, and broke into stores, flipped cars, and many other non-peaceful, destrcutive acts PRIOR to the national guard being called into town. The ONLY reason the national guard was there in the first place was because the "innocent protestors" destroyed half of the town. Not to mention, how ignorant must one be to throw a rock at a person holding a firemarm? just asking...?
Pat May 1, 2012 at 06:53 pm
John you are so right. You didn't mention that they were threatening to burn down the post office-where military records were kept or putting LSD in the Kent's water system. The students were given full warning to leave the KSU campus. Not to mention threatening the lives of the policemen and also local businesses. I am so done turning May4 into a celebration.
Ann May 1, 2012 at 07:53 pm
A celebration? Try remembering a wrong being done to students. It is a shame that so many have not researched what really happened. I am not saying that some things done downdown were wrong, however, it was never proven that it was students that did the damage. Regardless, there was not a reason to shoot students. The four students and the nine injured did not deserve to be shot. I wish people would at least look into facts before making such insensitive remarks.
Rick Hartley May 1, 2012 at 09:28 pm
Weren't the students who were shot simply onlookers, unarmed in any way, and standing quite a distance from the National Guard?
robert May 1, 2012 at 09:32 pm
To John and Pat above , I am so wonderfully surprised to know that there are persons that feel as I do about the May 4th happening.I think that memorial is an abomination ! Being an exKSU student and an exGuardsman , when things get out of hand persons get hurt, injured or killed.
To Ann,your statements has been the topic of discussion since the very start !You want to find a reason for the killing ! The persons killed ,I believe had no connection to the distruction. They simply were at the wrong place at the wrong time. When the shooting was over you should have been at a place to see who were speeding out of the city ! I do not know if they were the SDS , or what the red arm bands meant. The innocent students were stirred up with anti war sentiments and possibly wanted to be part of the goings on !Thus the happening ! I woud say to anyone , please run from these situations because bad things happen to good people ! We may see more of this when , what is called the American Spring starts this spring with the take over of streets and busineses in many Citys again by innocent stirred up by a differant faction !

Anne--you are so uninformed about what actually happened on May1-4th. I also forgot to mention that the National guard was standing on top of the Mill and surrounded it as the rioters threatened to blow it up. Oh yes the Chicago 7 were in Kent the night the students burned the ROTC building, the SDS was here also, hidden under the old Brady's and also on the hill in the old house on Depeyseter St. and then the one non - student who actually had a gun in his hand might have shot the first shot. All the ploice in charge are gone and some on the task force just wants to make up lies about what actually happened. Enough already--there are some alive here in Kent that actually lived and breathed May 1-4

An investigation, led by Nixon's own executive branch, concluded that the shootings were unwarranted, unneccessery and an overreaction. The damage in the town, away from campus, occurring at a time prior to this protest on campus had nothing to do with the situation on campus at the time of the shootings and bringing it up displays a lack of logic, not to mention legal reasoning.

Paula, While I believe there are truly good people out there who have nothing but the bestRead More intentions for others, this story does not shock nor surprise me. I attended meetings with a friend who was court ordered. They couldn't drive and I figured I would sit with them instead of driving back and forth. AA claims not to be a religious sect but all the meetings and steps center around God. Not that I have a problem with God, but some people don't believe. Our courts (Judges) sentence people to attend meetings for DUI. I find this sad and irresponsible. One, it's religion. Two, you are sending alcoholics in to a group of other alcoholics who are not trained to help people with addiction. AA teaches people they are "helpless and powerless". Really? An individual has to find strength from within to fight the addiction. Telling people they are helpless isn't going to help. Alcoholism is usually tied to mental issues or illness. Going into a room and listening to other people's depressing rock bottom stories made me want to leave and go drink. Paradise Club....... hmmmmmmm...... I am not surprised. The only reason these court ordered sessions continue is that it doesn't cost the court any money. DUI's are a money maker for the courts, police and all the attorney's out there. Ah, but that's another story. I hope there is a happy ending for all of those above and others like them who have suffered under the guise of AA.

Maybe it is just the start to a slow summer or a sign that there is nothing interesting going on inRead More Kent. The story you mentioned turned out to be pretty uneventful and more about a guy making false, not real, threats. The two stories that have seen the most face-time have been KRHS's valedictorian and the med helicopter. Maybe highlight achievements and products of local businesses we don't hear about. Run an interesting historical piece. Not trying to be argumentative but rather making a comment that the information provided as of late has been less than interesting.

The school levy has passed. This is great news for the children of Kent. Thanks to everyone whoRead More voted for the levy.

Glad to see that 17% of Kent citizens were able to muster the energy to bother voting, and that theRead More majority of those few supported this very important issue. Congrats to the District for making the convincing argument. It's pretty clear that the chorus of "NO" that exists here on Patch is not representative of the majority.

I'm glad the League did their research. Have they ever researched and said: "no, we dont feelRead More the levy is needed?" For most of us, our research need only go as far as our wallets and income. If the schools with their million dollar budgets are feeling the crunch, imagine how average or lower average income homes are struggling. I am very suspect of the excellent w/ distincton rating and the asking of this levy at this time. How were we able to get that kind of incredible rating with NO ADDED FUNDS? Did the teachers wake up last year? Did the kids wake up? How did the school get such superior ratings THAT year and none in previous ones? why such a huge gap in time and ratings? The days of passing every school levy "just because", "we've never said no", "for the kids" or to keep our "property values" are over. The economy took care of that. No matter how you feel about the levy: PLEASE VOTE.
Sa;;y April 25, 2013 at 11:24 pm
I urge my fellow residents to send a message to the school board: The Board needs to face the factRead More of the current economic conditions involving the residents in the Kent city school district and come back with a request for a more reasonable millage. Otherwise, I think the levy will fail. Our city leaders encouraged businesses to come into the new development by granting concessions on taxes. Well, there goes the additional money!
Sue May 7, 2013 at 12:23 pm
Vote YES today for Kent children. Yes on the school levy.
