Rough Riders Start Hockey Season with Win

Kent Roosevelt beat Cleveland Benedictine 10-0

While Thanksgiving may have been last Thursday, Kent Roosevelt hockey coach Ben Barlow had plenty of talented players to be thankful for after a 10-0 win against Cleveland Benedictine to open regular season play on Friday at Cleveland Heights Community Center.

Ten different Rough Riders tallied on the score sheet with seniors Tom Fisher (4 goals) and Bob Danner (2 goals, 2 assists) and sophomore Scott Rainey (1 goal, 3 assists) leading the way with four points each.

Roosevelt goalie Nate Grootegoed stopped the twelve shots he faced in notching his first shutout of the season.

The Rough Riders special teams were solid in the victory as they scored on three of their six power play opportunities and successfully shut down the Tigers only power play opportunity.

Blue Line Notes

Former Roosevelt standout hockey player, Kevin Burroughs, now an athletic trainer in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization is an assistant coach on the team this season.

Roosevelt’s two freshman players, Mike Kenney and Gabe Smith, netted their first high school career goals in the game Friday. Smith also had an assist.

The Rough Riders next game is at home against Benedictine Thursday, Dec 1, at 7:15 p.m. at the Kent State University Ice Arena.
