Kent State Hotel Construction Progressing (PHOTOS)

94-room boutique hotel under construction on South DePeyster Street to open in June 2013

While strolling through the construction site of the new Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center one word came to mind: classy.

Even though now it's just metal studs and exposed utilities it's pretty easy to see what the end goal is designers are shooting for.

As Karen Durepro, construction projects manager for put it, "it's a true boutique hotel."

A huge, open lobby area will stretch the length of the building from Erie Street along South DePeyster Street to Haymaker Parkway. Raised ceilings will highlight a 50 seat restaurant with a 20 seat, full-service bar all in the lobby area.

"It will be one, long corridor," Durepro said. "It's a pretty big restaurant."

The hotel pool, small by your typical travel hotel standards, will be enclosed with walls of glass with an adjoining exercise room.

The informally titled "presidential suite" is two traditional king-sized suites combined with its own private terrace — overlooking .

The hotel's other terrace, with a capacity of 50 and a partial roof, will be available when guests book the board room on the second floor and the adjoining king-sized suite. That terrace overlooks the intersection of Haymaker Parkway and South DePeyster Street with views of the and .

The interior color scheme of the hotel won't scream , Durepro said. Though it will include tones similar to the university's familiar gold and blue.

Thanks to the full kitchen, all 94 rooms will have full room service.

The 300-seat banquet center will include dividing walls so the room can be split for smaller weddings or parties.

And every window will have a view.

"We took great pains in designing the project so all the mechanical equipment sits up on the high roof," Durepro said. "So whatever room you're in you have a nice view. You don't go open up your curtain and there's a piece of mechanical equipment sitting right in front of your window."

What will really determine the hotel's status will surely be the room rates, which Durepro said still haven't been determined.

But you can make reservations now for the hotel's opening, which is expected in June 2013.
