UPDATE: Less Hot Water at Kent State Due to Steam Restrictions

Valve failure at Summit Street Power Plant means less hot water available on campus

UPDATE: Normal service has been restored on campus.

The showers at Kent State University may be a little cold today.

The university put in place steam restrictions this week following a failure of a valve that forced the university to operate the campus steam boilers at reduced capacity.

University officials issued this statement this week:

A recent and unforeseen valve failure in the Summit Street Power Plant will require the steam boilers providing heating, cooling and domestic hot water to campus to operate at reduced capacity for approximately 36 hours. Since the daytime temperature forecast for the next few days is expected to be in the 70s, most buildings should experience minimal impact. This reduced capacity will be more noticeable in the mornings when the outside air temperature is lowest.

Buildings with showers, such as the residence halls and the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, will experience the greatest potential for disruption since the steam is used to heat the water. As a result, there will be a reduced capacity to recover when under heavy usage. Any activities that conserve on heating, cooling and hot water use will be greatly appreciated during this 36-hour time period.

The steam restrictions will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 a.m. Normal conditions should be restored by Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
