Ice Carvers Weather Raging Snowstorm For Their Art

8th Annual "Make Mine With Ice" ice carving exhibition was held Saturday at Hometown Plaza.

Remember the intensity of Saturday afternoon's snowstorm? Members of the and The University of Akron ice carving clubs sure do.

The ice carving exhibition was held Saturday at Hometown Plaza in downtown Kent during the height of that storm.

"Make Mine With Ice" is one of several annual events sponsored by as part of the Downtown Innovative Community Events series. D.I.C.E. is a grassroots partnership between Standing Rock and downtown businesses whose purpose is to revitalize downtown Kent through cultural events.

Kent photographer Brad Bolton, who weathered the storm to take the photos accompanying this story, said, "A few hardy souls showed up occasionally. It was windy and cold! The snow came in dense squalls, and was quite pretty while it was coming down."

The solid blocks of ice, transformed into sculptural masterpieces, remained long after the carvers stopped their chainsaws Saturday afternoon.
