Bridging Kent's History
Two back-to-back family events are set for Sunday, Sept. 25 in downtown Kent.The Kent Parks and Recreation Department and the Kent Historical Society invite one and all to attend "Bridging Kent's History." The program begins at 1 p.m., when a new Kent landmark will be unveiled. The Bicentennial Sculpture, created by renowned Kent sculptor George Danhires, will be dedicated at its permanent home between the Gazebo and the Erie Depot (Pufferbelly restaurant) on Franklin Avenue.Next, at 2 p.m., the community will commemorate the 134th anniversary of the opening of the Main Street Stone Arch Bridge. The birthday party will recreate the day 134 years ago when Marvin Kent officially opened the bridge. The party will feature an event complete with speeches by actors dressed in period costume and a horse-drawn wagon carrying descendants of the first people who crossed the bridge in 1877.Also planned are performances by the Theodore Roosevelt High School singing group "Aces,' as well as birthday cake and tours of the bridge.For more information please call (330) 678-2712 or email khs@kentohiohistory.org
