Cameras May be Coming to Kent Schools

Administrators looking at possible security upgrades for district buildings

Cameras, among other security upgrades, may be coming to buildings in the Kent City Schools.

Kent City Schools Superintendent Joseph Giancola said at a recent board meeting that he would like to see a camera posted at every entrance to the district's building, Ohio.com reports.

The idea of adding cameras will be talked about at community forums in September and October, Recordpub.com reported.

The district has about 4,000 students attending classes primarily in seven school buildings, excluding the Central Annex building.

"As a board and as an administrative team, we will do whatever the community asks us," Giancola said, according to Recordpub.com.

September and October? Don't you think that's a little far away? Nice to see the urgency to keep the kids and faculty safe. And tell me how a camera is going to help keep the schools safer?

I agree that Sept/Oct does seem at bit late, but I don't think this is the only thing the admins and staff are doing regarding safety and security. The second question above is just what needs to be determined. I did a little preliminary research, and found this link somewhat helpful: http://www.urban.org/publications/901450.html Most of the deployments studied formally to date seem to be monitoring exteriors in urban settings. The ACLU also has a white paper posted, but that is focused on a comparison of studies from the UK and focuses only on the impact on crime rates. As the notes at the bottom of the linked article indicates, this is more than question of the impact on rates or deterrence of criminal activity. Our schools will also need to consider the total costs (equipment, multiple installations, monitoring and maintenance), try to find statistically valid studies focused on similar uses, and consider this option in light of an overall security program.

Also found a nice up-to-date paper on school security out of Virginia for some background on the issues and the state-of-the-art: http://www.governor.virginia.gov/SchoolAndCampusSafetyTaskforce/docs/Best%20Practices%20in%20School%20Security.pdf
