Back to School: What to Know

Classes began this week for Kent grade-school students

With school back in session, here are some reminders to update families who want to ensure students are ready for the classroom.

The mailed individualized information packets last week to registered students throughout the district. School-supply lists vary and are determined by each school and, at the high school level, are distributed in the classroom by each teacher.

Classes and orientation started Wednesday for kindergarten, elementary and middle school students, as well as for freshmen and students new to . Classes started today for sophomores through seniors at the high school.

For kindergarten students, a set of vaccination shots is required to begin school, while students at the seventh-grade level must receive a DTaP  vaccination [a combined vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis], said Lori Slattery, Kent City Schools instructional program director.

Parents should have received post cards with information about each student’s bus route last week. Those with questions or needing additional information can call District Transportation at 330-676-7690, she said.

A list of all required forms for the 2011-2012 academic year are available for download and printing on the school-district website.

Kent City Schools Superintendent Joe Giancola said the purpose of the forms and procedures is "to ensure students’ safety, comfort and excellent teaching and learning."

About 3,700 students were enrolled in schools throughout the district during the previous academic year, he said.

"For teachers and support staff, the most exciting time of year is seeing our students come back to school," Giancola said.
