Kent city manager, schools superintendent talk about effects of state budget cuts on the local level

Kent residents joined their local government leaders Thursday for a frank discussion about the state budget, its large cuts and how it all will play out locally.

State Rep. Kathleen Clyde hosted a town hall meeting with Kent City Manager Dave Ruller and Kent City Schools Superintendent Joseph Giancola to talk about the budget at the .

Mainly, they gave a top-down summary of the cuts in the state budget and how those translate into budget reductions for the schools and city government.

  • Giancola said Kent City Schools expect a more than $4 million loss in state dollars in the next two years
  • Ruller said the city expects to lose between $500,000 and $600,000 due to this state budget

They also briefly answered questions from several residents in the audience.

Clyde said the state's budget must be signed into law by June 30 to begin the state's fiscal year and continue state operations.
