State Budget Topic of Town Hall Meeting Thursday in Kent

The state budget and how it will affect local government will be the topic of a town hall meeting hosted by State Rep. Kathleen Clyde Thursday at the .

Clyde, a Kent resident and attorney, will host a panel discussion about the budget with Kent City Schools Superintendent Joseph Giancola and Kent City Manager Dave Ruller.

The town hall starts at 6 p.m. in the library at 312 W. Main St.

The state budget, set to take effect July 1, slashes funding for local governments, school districts and universities.

At , officials there are bracing for as much as a $13 million cut in state support.

Last year, the city received $1.2 million from the state local government fund. City officials are expecting a cut of up to $300,000 when the state's new biennial budget takes effect.

Unlike the city and Kent State, the school district's share of state support actually will increase in the next year.

Figures released by the Ohio Office of Budget and Management in March show state assistance to Kent is projected to increase by 1 percent, or $123,158, for fiscal year 2012.

In total, the state provided $12.3 million in funding to Kent schools for the 2011 fiscal year. That is expected to increase to about $12.4 million for the 2012 fiscal year.

But state funding to the school district is projected to drop for the 2013 fiscal year by 1.8 percent, or $219,226, to about $12.2 million.
