UPDATE: New Parking Lot Opening Delayed

New downtown lot was expected to open Wednesday

Editor's note: this story was updated at 12:17p.m. and again at 8 p.m. July 31.

The opening of 120 new parking spaces downtown has been delayed.

The new parking lot being built for the city's redevelopment project with Fairmount Properties was set to open as early as Wednesday, but city officials are delaying the opening until at least Aug. 13.

Kent City Engineer Jim Bowling said Tuesday the lot was expected to be open for parking Wednesday, but there are some access issues that forced the delay.

"Even though the parking lot's done and striped we're not going to open it up probably until (August) 13, but if we can get it done sooner we will," he said.

The bulk of the spaces, 105, are committed to serving office personnel at AMETEK and the Davey Resource Group, which are the of the $30 million redevelopment project. The approximately 120 spaces will be available to the public after 6 p.m. on week nights and all weekend.

The parking lot is situated in the middle of the block bordered by Haymaker Parkway, South Water, South DePeyster and Erie streets.

Workers at both corporate tenants will be issued parking permits for the lot. The parking spaces will be managed during week day regular business hours by the city's parking enforcement officer.

will this be "free" parking?

Please tell me these spaces, the few left throughout the week, will allow parking longer than two hours. I had an appointment downtown and chose to park in the lot behind Town Hall II, and had to move my car 1/2 into my appointment. No good.

I wonder if the 15 remaining during the day will actually be handicap-restricted access?

Can the public use all the spots until the businesses' buildings are completed & in use?
