Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) - Public Meeting

The Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS) is hosting an April 5 meeting to receive public comments regarding its Draft Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for Fiscal Years 2012 through 2015.

The TIP is the comprehensive program of more than $628 million of highway, public transit, and bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects scheduled to receive federal transportation funds over the next four years within the Greater Akron area.  AMATS is the agency responsible for planning and scheduling transportation projects within this area.

The agency will present the draft program during a public meeting on Tuesday, April 5 scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Stow Safety Building located at 3800 Darrow Road in Stow.  Transit service is available to this meeting via METRO Route #103 – Stow/Hudson.

The latest TIP addresses the common problem confronting the nation’s transportation planning agencies: limited funding for projects.  While the draft program includes a number of major and much-needed improvement projects, it also promotes preservation of the area’s existing system rather than costly roadway expansions.

A unique aspect of this TIP is that it has many projects aimed at promoting connectivity among communities such as improved public transit service, new bike and hike trails and similar pedestrian-oriented improvements.

The public is encouraged to comment on the Draft TIP.  Copies of the draft program will also be available for public review for 14 days beginning Monday, April 4 and ending Friday, April 15 at various locations including the AMATS web site at www.amatsplanning.org.

All public comments should be submitted to AMATS by April 15.
