4 Street Signs Stolen Along Crain Avenue

Signs missing from predominantly student rental occupied streets

It seems there's no end to the end of-the-year hi-jinx.

If you've driven along Crain Avenue recently you may have noticed something is missing from the neighborhood. Actually, several somethings are missing.

The little, rectangular green street signs with white letters atop metal poles at several intersections along Crain Avenue are missing — presumably stolen — coincidentally about a week after classes let out for the summer at Kent State University.

The signs are missing where Crain Avenue intersects with University Drive, Wilson, Linden and Sherman streets. The thieves took the signs for the individual streets and each sign re-identifying Crain Avenue to leave several bare poles appearing purposeless along the street.

All four streets are densely populated with student rental properties. Oddly, in that same stretch of Crain Avenue street signs on the north side of the street for Miller Street, which is primarily lined with single-family houses, and Crain Avenue were left untouched.

Kent Service Director Gene Roberts said Tuesday his department will place the work orders to replace the signs today and conceded to the idea Kent "may have a new end of the year issue to deal with."
