Woman Charged with Assaulting Detention Officer

Shirley M. Van Horn, 54, arrested on burglary charge

A Kent woman has been charged with burglary and assaulting a Kent Police officer.

Shirley M. Van Horn, 54, of 250 S. River St., apartment C13, was arrested Sunday and charged with burglary, a second-degree felony.

While Van Horn was being held at the she assaulted Kent Police detention officer Keith Cooper, according to Portage County court records. The assault happened in the detention facility at the police station on South Water Street.

The assault charge is a fifth-degree felony.

Police arrrested Van Horn at her home Sunday afternoon for breaking into a neighboring apartment at 250 S. River St. earlier that day.

Van Horn was released Monday on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond under the condition that she have no contact with the complainant. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the burglary charge this morning before Portage County Municipal Court Judge Barb Oswick.
