Tickets Keep Coming for Illegal Turn onto Fairchild Bridge

191 tickets issued by Kent Police in May for illegal turn

Kent cops are keeping a watchful eye on the intersection of North Mantua Street and Fairchild Avenue, and the number of tickets issued there shows it.

The police department announced officers wrote 191 tickets to drivers making an illegal turn at city intersections, and most were issued to drivers making the prohibited left turn from the southbound lane of S.R. 43 onto the new Fairchild Avenue Bridge.

That's almost double the 106 tickets issued in April for the same violation.

"You might not always see us, but we are out there enforcing the law," the department announced on its website.

The total number of illegal turn tickets in Kent break down by month as follows:

Turn Violation Tickets

January February March April May 2012 9 11 12 106 191 2011 n/a n/a n/a n/a 2

Just 41 tickets total were issued in 2011 for turning violations at all of Kent's intersections.

The left turn onto the bridge is expected to remain illegal through August as construction finishes on the S.R. 43 road surface.

Good! If these fools can't see the -- what is it?--5 or 6 signs?-- then they deserve the hefty ticket. Meanwhile, the city of Kent -- and their residents -- thank these people for the additional income to the city.

KPD, keep up the good work! Kent can use the additional revenue! How many are texting or on their cell?

There is a African American man who turns left daily around 2pm. I yell at him daily also and tell him No left turn--he may not understand English but if he wants to drive in our city he better learn. I think the KPD is doing an excellent job there too.

I have to second Paxton's "wow" and also ask: why are at this intersection every day around 2pm? Holding a sign asking for $$$?

Pat. Wow. Maybe you should move to Texas. There are much more of your kind there.

Or pluck you from your comfy, white, "majority" status and plop you down in the heart of a foreign speaking country where you're a tiny minority. You won't know the language. You won't know the customs. You won't know much of anything. Good to see how life treats you when the shoe is on the other foot. I hope they'd be more understanding of your situation then you are of others. Remember that golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I voted in favor of the left turn light at this intersection, in the Kent Patch poll, but after thinking about I now would vote against it. I think no decision on the left turn arrow should be made until all the intersection improvements are completed and true traffic patterns become established. Then, if there is indeed a queuing problem for cars turning north, the addition of a left turn arrow should be evaluated. Maybe, at that time, just having the light stay green for an extra 10 or 12 seconds would allow left-turning traffic to clear the intersection.

Oh give me a break--I was making a statement only. I pass that way daily at 2pm when I am coming home from work.

Rather than focus on the color and make of the car he was driving, you choose to focus soley on his skin color. The type and color car, plus a license plate number since you see him daily, would be much more beneficial.
Paxton Crenshaw June 21, 2012 at 01:16 AM
no break, pat, sorry. the driver's skin color is irrelevant to the story and to avoid appearing bigoted, you should've left it out. furthermore, your speculation that he doesn't speak english (assuming you meant this because of his skin color) only makes things worse. oh - and the part where you imply that only english-speaking people should be allowed to drive in our city, that doesn't reflect too nicely on you either. go back to talking about the fashion bug, please - it will win you more friends.

If your bringing fashion bug back can we get giant apples back too please? Thanks Paxton.

I wonder if African American is being used to determine PLACE OF GEOGRAPHIC ORIGIN as a buzz word for the more unpopular "Black". I love it when people try to be racist and polite. What does him being "African American" have to do with any part of your post, or would you care to explain why it was so important to call out in the situation.

I live right near Crowley Court and have noticed for months the increasing amount of cars pulled over getting tickets directly across from my front porch. It is like clockwork every 30-45 minutes. siren beeps, lights flash, ticket tickets tickets. I regularly count the cars being pulled over. It is at least twice an hour all hours, not just peak afternoon.... they are sirening at 2-3-4-5-6am. It is becoming ridiculous. It can be a real annoyance hearing police sirens all night long when one has to wake up early in the morning. They should use that money to speed up the final construction around Lake Street -Crain Avenue-Water Streets corners debacle. 106 tickets last month, 190+ this month. I predict over 300 for July. Good job Kent Cops.
