Officer Injured in Car Crash

Driver cited for failing to maintain assured clear distance

A Kent Police officer is recovering today after being involved in a minor car crash on North Mantua Street.

Kent Police Officer Kathleen Glass was rear-ended in her police cruiser while driving south on North Mantua Street Wednesday.

Kent Police Lt. James Prusha said the accident happened in the 100 block of North Mantua Street shortly after 9 p.m.

"She had to stop because a car in front of her slowed down to turn into a driveway," Prusha said.

Police cited Kent business owner Michael Beder for failing to maintain assured clear distance, a minor misdemeanor, after striking Glass' patrol car from behind.

Prusha said Glass had to be taken to an area hospital after the accident with non-life threatening injuries. Glass will be off duty for an undetermined period.
