UPDATE: Name of Kent State Student Found Dead Released; Preliminary Autopsy Finished

Officials have released the name of the in his Kent State University dorm room Sunday.

James Barnes, 26, of Midland, PA, was found by Kent State University Police Sunday afternoon.

Kent State spokesperson Emily Vincent said police officers found Barnes in his fourth floor room in Leebrick Hall after a family member called the university and asked them to check in on him because he hadn't contacted family for some time.

Barnes was a first-semester graduate student pursuing his master's degree, according to the university.

Barnes' cause of death has not been released, but officials have said foul play is not suspected.

The chief investigator for the Portage County Coroner's Office, Tom Decker, said preliminary autopsy results were finished this morning and they're now waiting on microscopic testing and toxicology testing, which would indicate if Barnes had alcohol or other drugs in his system at the time of death.

"The results of cause of death are pending," Decker said. "It doesn't appear to be (foul play) at this point."

Results of those tests could take weeks, Decker said.

The university released a brief statement today expressing condolences to Barnes' family and reminding students where they can go on campus for counseling.

"The university wishes to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends for a life lost far too soon," the statement read.

The "To Write Love on Her Arms" chapter at Kent State has organized a candlelight vigil for Barnes this Thursday from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the rock on front campus.

Decker said previously that how long Barnes lay dead before he was found "has not been determined yet."

Leebrick Hall comprises single rooms and is home to about 325 students, according to the university's website. Alcohol is allowed for of-age students on floors one through five of the 12-floor, co-ed dorm. It is a part of the Tri-Towers dorm complex off Loop Road on the eastern edge of campus.

Barnes' death marked a tragic end to the university's homecoming weekend, when thousands of alumni returned for a number of events, including the and the football team's loss to Miami University.
