"We did set off the (tornado) sirens based on the regular weather warnings that were broadcast," Kent Police Lt. Paul Canfield said. "We didn’t see anything in the city. Actually we had somebody north and west in the area who didn’t see anything."

Like most of Portage County, Kent was under a tornado watch for much of Wednesday evening.

"Kent must have escaped it last night," Canfield said.

Kent Fire Lt. Patrick Edwards said only a few small outages were reported after high winds swept through Kent Wednesday night.

"But nothing significant fortunately," he said.

Fewer than 500 people lost power in Portage County this morning, including in parts of Kent, according to estimates from FirstEnergy. Service has since been restored.

But the storms aren't over. NWS forecasts call for thunderstorms again this afternoon, and Kent is under both a flood warning and flood advisory today.
