UPDATE: Hearing Today for Student in Kent State Twitter Threat Case

University police release booking photo of William Koberna

Editor's note: find .

police this morning released the booking photo of the 19-year-old sophomore charged with on campus.

William Koberna, of Brunswick, will be arraigned this afternoon by Judge Barb Oswick on charges of inducing panic, a fifth-degree felony, and aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Koberna is being held in the Portage County jail until his arraignment.

He was arrested Sunday at his home in Brunswick after posting a tweet on his Twitter account in which he threatened to use a fire arm on campus.

The tweet reportedly included profanity directed at Kent State President Lester Lefton and also stated "I'm shooting up your school ASAP," according to Ohio.com.

The criminal complaint, filed this morning by university police, states Koberna caused serious public inconvenience or alarm by threatening to commit an offense of violence resulting in economic harm exceeding $1,000, according to court records.

Aside from the criminal charges, Koberna faces university hearings that could lead to his suspension or dismissal.

Anymore the police cannot NOT take anyone seriously when they make a threat. It's homegrown terrorism. Don't know if there are that many disturbed kids out there or just wanting their 15 minutes of fame & a criminal record.

It's so easy to access guns in this country.
I.M. Wright July 30, 2012 at 11:56 pm
And this guy had no weapons whatsoever.
tom m July 31, 2012 at 02:38 am
i.m wright ...remember that it is illegal to yell fire in a crowded movie theater so yelling im gonna shoot up a school is just as illegal (try screaming I have a bomb on a plane and see where that gets you)
Ralph July 31, 2012 at 02:40 pm
It's not that easy for law abiding citizens to get a gun, Brunstetter-Reynolds. Citizens must go through a background check, criminals just go out and buy guns illegally. Gun control only gets guns out of the hands of those who own carry licenses and take classes for proper use of their weapon. As far as I'm concerned, the anti gunners are accomplices to senseless killings of innocents. Those little "no gun" signs on doors don't stop criminals; it assists them because they know there no one in there able to protect themselves and others. If I was shot in CO, I'd bring charges against the theater for not having adequate security to protect me since they would'nt allow me to protect myself. We've tried gun control for decades and it doesn't work. Bad guys will get firearms whenever they want.
James Vaughan July 31, 2012 at 04:16 pm
I am fed up with the endless BS denial from people who want to have whatever cool gun/toy they can buy! At the root of all of this is a love of or a fantasy about violence. Gun people and the gun lobbies scare me because they have a lot of guns! I like guns. I played with toy guns a lot when I was a kid. I belonged to the NRA for awhile because I was an expert marksmen. The concept that processing high rate of fire assault weapons and combat firearms designed for killing a lot of people quickly is linked to what is specified in the constitution is absurd. Get into a discussion with these firepower peiople and what always comes up is there fantasy that they need to be able to shoot it out with the government if they're 'freedoms' are threatened. There was a ban on assault weapons- and it was repealed. I have no argument with hunting rifles or revolvers or antique collecting. But frankly I have never met a 'gun collector' that didn't have a few screws loose. The second amendment uses the term 'well-regulated' !
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Lets get out of denial people- having a high rate of fire, military weapon in your procession means you intend to, or fantasize about- shooting a lot of people!
James Vaughan July 31, 2012 at 04:35 pm
Ralph- even in my best fantasies about being an armed hero in that Colorado movie theater- how good and effective is my 'return-fire' going to be in an auditorium chocked with panicked people? 'Conceal-carry' is a very dangerous concept. Twelve hours of training is barely enough to get me past the the 'don't shoot my foot off' stage. Anybody who has has much experience with firearms knows the last place you want to be is surrounded by a bunch of people with guns.
James Vaughan July 31, 2012 at 06:41 pm
... rather than rely on some old lady that's got a Smith and Wesson in her handbag- American's need to have a little, realistic, 'crazy-gunman' training.
We all squirm in our seats reading about these horrific nightmares wondering deep down- why didn't someone do something- anything?! Let's take a note from 'those crazy Arabs' ...SHOES ! Seriously folks. Time and again i read accounts of how people in that Colorado theater 'did not know what to do'. Everybody has two shoes, plus car keys. cell phones etc. Ducking from thrown objects is an instinctual response. [1] throw your shoes and everything else not nailed down at the attacker ( we are now talking about 100 to 200 airborne objects coming at the target wacko) [2] while he's busy ducking EVERYBODY rush him and tackle him to the ground! This would all take only a couple of seconds at the most. I know it sounds silly at first. But think about what has happened with airline passengers since 9-11 and United #93. Anybody on a flight that causes a ruckus or acts crazy these days is lucky to escape the wrath of their fellow passengers alive! Training people what to do in a fire is common, schools and institutions have started to practice lock-down procedures. Ralph is right that people have to defend themselves. But I'm a lot more likely to have a hysterical teenager next to me when the carnage erupts than good ol' pistol packin' Ralph.
Ralph July 31, 2012 at 10:21 pm
Society has caused us to become sheep James. No one would've thrown anything at him and doubt he would flinch if a cell phone came his way-he wore body armor and was ready for shoes, keys and whatever was thrown at him. I too am a marksman and would have sent two rounds to his thoratic cavity and if that failed to cease the threat, one to the cranial would've done it. So don't worry James, pistol packin Ralph has your back. That is of course if there isn't a little gun free zone sticker on the window. Then you and your shoes are on your own.
Mary August 1, 2012 at 12:19 am
"I too am a marksman and would have sent two rounds to his thoratic cavity and if that failed to cease the threat, one to the cranial would've done it."
Oh, what a great video game scenario. How many of your shots would have penetrated any of him after he'd already ripped through your flesh with a barrage of bullets from a semi automatic assault rifle? Or the spray from a shotgun? Your much stated dreams of wild west vigilante justice are just plain scary. Not to mention highly unrealistic. And if everyone in the theatre with you believed themselves to be a marksman and was packing heat, how many extra bullets would have permeated the air and subsequent flesh? Just like the mystery of the tootsie pop, the world may never know...

this coming from someone who post silly comments like this
Mary Lou Brunstetter-Reynolds 5:44 pm on Sunday, July 29, 2012 I wish every vehicle was equipped with either an interlock device or something similar to help prevent those with less inhibitions from doing ignorant, life endangering acts.

How about we focus on the fact that he was arrested, and then let out on bail?
Mary August 1, 2012 at 06:55 pm
"It's not that easy for law abiding citizens to get a gun"
Hard to imagine it's that difficult with so many CCW permit holders are roaming the state. Also, have you ever been to a gun show or bought a gun from a private dealer? Not too hard to get a gun.

Paula, While I believe there are truly good people out there who have nothing but the bestRead More intentions for others, this story does not shock nor surprise me. I attended meetings with a friend who was court ordered. They couldn't drive and I figured I would sit with them instead of driving back and forth. AA claims not to be a religious sect but all the meetings and steps center around God. Not that I have a problem with God, but some people don't believe. Our courts (Judges) sentence people to attend meetings for DUI. I find this sad and irresponsible. One, it's religion. Two, you are sending alcoholics in to a group of other alcoholics who are not trained to help people with addiction. AA teaches people they are "helpless and powerless". Really? An individual has to find strength from within to fight the addiction. Telling people they are helpless isn't going to help. Alcoholism is usually tied to mental issues or illness. Going into a room and listening to other people's depressing rock bottom stories made me want to leave and go drink. Paradise Club....... hmmmmmmm...... I am not surprised. The only reason these court ordered sessions continue is that it doesn't cost the court any money. DUI's are a money maker for the courts, police and all the attorney's out there. Ah, but that's another story. I hope there is a happy ending for all of those above and others like them who have suffered under the guise of AA.

Maybe it is just the start to a slow summer or a sign that there is nothing interesting going on inRead More Kent. The story you mentioned turned out to be pretty uneventful and more about a guy making false, not real, threats. The two stories that have seen the most face-time have been KRHS's valedictorian and the med helicopter. Maybe highlight achievements and products of local businesses we don't hear about. Run an interesting historical piece. Not trying to be argumentative but rather making a comment that the information provided as of late has been less than interesting.

The school levy has passed. This is great news for the children of Kent. Thanks to everyone whoRead More voted for the levy.

Glad to see that 17% of Kent citizens were able to muster the energy to bother voting, and that theRead More majority of those few supported this very important issue. Congrats to the District for making the convincing argument. It's pretty clear that the chorus of "NO" that exists here on Patch is not representative of the majority.

I'm glad the League did their research. Have they ever researched and said: "no, we dont feelRead More the levy is needed?" For most of us, our research need only go as far as our wallets and income. If the schools with their million dollar budgets are feeling the crunch, imagine how average or lower average income homes are struggling. I am very suspect of the excellent w/ distincton rating and the asking of this levy at this time. How were we able to get that kind of incredible rating with NO ADDED FUNDS? Did the teachers wake up last year? Did the kids wake up? How did the school get such superior ratings THAT year and none in previous ones? why such a huge gap in time and ratings? The days of passing every school levy "just because", "we've never said no", "for the kids" or to keep our "property values" are over. The economy took care of that. No matter how you feel about the levy: PLEASE VOTE.
Sa;;y April 25, 2013 at 11:24 pm
I urge my fellow residents to send a message to the school board: The Board needs to face the factRead More of the current economic conditions involving the residents in the Kent city school district and come back with a request for a more reasonable millage. Otherwise, I think the levy will fail. Our city leaders encouraged businesses to come into the new development by granting concessions on taxes. Well, there goes the additional money!
Sue May 7, 2013 at 12:23 pm
Vote YES today for Kent children. Yes on the school levy.
