Fire Department Names 'Great Escape' Winners

Kent grade-school students competed to create the best escape route for their houses in a fire

Each year, students at schools around Kent are challenged to create a fire escape route from their homes.

And each year the winners of the 's "Great Escape" contest are treated to a pizza party and tour of the main fire station.

"The escape plans were selected because they met the requirements of
a great plan," according to the fire department. "All escape plans should include two ways out of every room, hazardous areas where fires may start and how to avoid these areas when exiting the building, a meeting place that everyone in the family knows, placement of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers."

The pizza party is Monday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. at the main fire station on South DePeyster Street.

This year's winners were chosen from each fourth grade class in all Kent elementary schools. The winners are:
