Drunken Driving Checkpoint on S.R. 59 Friday

The checkpoint will be from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

UPDATED: June 21 at 8:57 a.m.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced Friday morning that a drunken driving checkpoint will be conducted on State Route 59 Friday evening from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The highway patrol will work in conjunction with the Kent Police Department, Portage County Sheriff’s Department, Kent State University Police Department, Ravenna Police Department, Brimfield Township Police Department and the Brady Lake Village Police Department.

"If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," according to a press release.

A drunken driving checkpoint will be in Portage County Friday evening, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol

The location of the checkpoint will be announced on Friday morning.

The checkpoint is paid for with federal money and is planned to prevent and deter impaired drivers.

“Based on provisional data, there were 454 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 496  people were killed last year in Ohio,” Lt. Chris Heverly, commander of the Ravenna Post, said in a prepared statement. “State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in an attempt to combat these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways.”
