Drug Take-Back Sponsored by County Sheriff

Unwanted prescription drugs can be dropped off Oct. 29

Kent residents can get rid of their unwanted, old prescription drugs during a drug take-back event sponsored by the Portage County Sheriff's Office Oct. 29.

Residents can drop off their prescription drugs between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Portage County Water Resources Department at 8116 Infirmary Road, Ravenna, OH.

The service is free and anonymous. Deputies will ask no questions of people disposing of prescription drugs at the event.

Portage County Sheriff David Doak said studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends — and the home medicine cabinet.

"“Medicines that are stored in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse," Doak said in a press release. "Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs."

Doak added that flushing unused medication down the toilet or simply throwing it away in the trash both pose potential safety and health hazards.
