Those who braved the icy waters of East Twin Lake recently helped raise $3,000 for the Don Beckett Memorial Scholarship.
The Fairways at Twin Lakes played host to the inaugural Polar Bear Plunge Feb. 24 when dozens of people jumped into the bone-chilling waters for $5 apiece to support the scholarship, which is awarded on a yearly basis to one Roosevelt High School graduate with a fervent interest in the medical field.
David Beck, owner of The Fairways, presented a $3,000 check to Heidi Beckett and Kent Fire Chief Dave Manthey Wednesday.
Beckett – a Kent firefighter who lost a prolonged battle with cancer in 2011 – was instrumental in setting up the scholarship a decade ago.
