Robert E. Farrell, 86, Served in World War II

Kent native spent later years in California

Robert E. Farrell (Bob), age 86, passed away on March 1st in the San Francisco Bay area of California. He lived most of his life in Kent and Cuyahoga Falls before moving to California early in the 21st Century to be near his son.

A week after turning 17, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy during wartime in February of 1944. Serving as a Torpedoman’s Mate he was awarded two Liberation of the Philippines medals, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He later served on board the USS Stack as she was readied for the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands during Operation Crossroads.

Over 31 years Bob worked for B.F. Goodrich Research in Brecksville, and later Uniroyal Goodrich in the racing tire division. He retired from Michelin as a Supervising Engineer. While with Goodrich, a U.S. Patent was issued in his name for a machine used in tire production.

He was a coach in Cuyahoga Falls Little League for over 20 years, and served as President of the league for one term.

He was preceded in death by his father Joseph Robert Farrell, and his mother Mae Edith (Eary) Farrell. He was also preceded by his sister A. Flora, his brother Joseph Jr., his brother Hugh, his sister Mary Margaret, his brother Patrick, his sister Catherine, and his brother Richard.

His wife, Helen (Mason) Farrell, passed in 1995, his son Kevin in 2002, and his granddaughter, Kimberly Brynn (Robert), in 2003.

He is survived by his son Robert (Diane Robison Farrell) as well as grandchildren Farah, Katie, Fiona and Eddie, and Kevin’s daughter Olivia.

Bob also is survived by his sisters Ellen Jones, Anna Gray, Edith Herwick, Josephine (John) Hughes, Agnes (Jerry) Moore, Judy (Ken) Flick, and his brother Frank.

He leaves 49 nieces and nephews.

His final resting place will be with his family at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Calling hours will be Friday March 8 from 6 to 8PM in the Ciriello-Carr Memorial Home at 810 Portage Trail in Cuyahoga Falls. Funeral services will be held in the Cierello-Carr Memorial home at 10AM on Saturday March 9, with Father Thomas McCann presiding. The procession to Standing Rock will immediately follow.

The family invites all who know the Farrell Family to drop in for a bit in the party room at Rocco’s Pizza on Portage Trail in Cuyahoga Falls between 1:30PM and 3:30PM on Saturday for food and beverage in the tradition of an Irish wake. In lieu of flowers, please try to do a little extra when you can for your favorite charity or place of worship, with a thought to Bob.
