Mercedes Zavala Hoefler, 93, pianist who played for Kent UCC youth choir and at Stow Glen Retirement Center

She was an associate director of Sweet Adelines and did bookkeeping for Music Mart

Mercedes Marie Zavala Hoefler served as pianist for the youth choir at before retiring to Land O’ Lakes, FL, in 1981.

After returning to Northeast Ohio in 1999 and settling in Stow, she volunteered at   where she played piano for Friday morning religious services.

The Canton native, who died Feb. 10 at age 93, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music from Dana’s Music Institute, now the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University.

Hoefler, whose maiden name was Zavala, served as an associate director of the Sweet Adelines women’s chorus and music chairman of the Stow Sunshiners.

She participated in a women’s circle and Primetimers meetings at UCC of Kent. She also belonged to Sorosis of Kent.

Hoefler had worked as an administrative assistant to the principal at Central Elementary School in Kent. She also did bookkeeping for the Print Shop, Commercial Press and Music Mart of Kent.

Her husband, Ervin “Red,” died in 1993.

Survivors include her sons, Robert of Stow and Randy of Plano, TX.

Calling hours are 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at , 628 West Main Street, Kent.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at the United Church of Christ of Kent, 1400 E. Main St.
