Haymaker Farmers Market's 19th Season is Upon Us!

Look for blog posts from new market manager Kelly Ferry here on Kent Patch throughout the season

We'll likely be off to a staggered start thanks to the cold, wet spring, so we won't have our full 50-plus vendors for a bit. Still, it's gearing up to be a busy season full of wonderful Northeast Ohio variety. If the sun stays out long enough to dry out the fields so our farmers can plow and plant, that is.

In case you haven't already heard, the market opens this coming Saturday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We'll kick off the season with live music by Galgozy/Zeleny Duo who are making the local circuit for their final year together performing folk guitar, banjo, and vocals. Music is free every week from 10 a.m. to noon, and it provides a meaningful local soundtrack to our busy market, which has become a real destination in downtown Kent.

This year, we're thrilled to have four Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association Certified Organic farms participating in the market, along with many other farmers and gardeners who offer a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and starts grown naturally without the use of herbicides or pesticides. Vendors also offer baked goods (including gluten free and vegan), grassfed cheese, eggs, goat cheese, honey, maple syrup, prepared foods, handmade dried pasta, seedlings, bedding plants, hypertufa containers, soaps, lotions, artwork, crafts and so much more. Stay tuned to this blog for profiles of some of the vendors who are working hard to create a strong and diverse local food chain in Northeast Ohio.

We're aware that it's becoming increasingly important to citizens and consumers to know how and where their food was grown, and we're working to make as much information is available at point of sale as possible. Be sure to swing by the market information booth under the bridge to pick up a copy of our vendor map and information about all of the great products available at the market.

When you're done meeting with friends and neighbors, and stocking your crisper drawers at the market, we hope you'll also take time to visit some of Kent's great downtown businesses because buying local strengthens our community!
