Rough Riders Skate to Tie with Benedictine
Third period woes continue to plague Rough RIders hockey team.
Third period woes continued for the Kent Roosevelt ice hockey team on Saturday night as they tied Cleveland Benedictine 1-1 in a White Division league game at the Cleveland Heights Community Center.
In their previous two league games, the Riders lack of late-game scoring and allowing opponents to overcome three goal deficits resulted in a loss and a narrow victory that required overtime to achieve.
On Saturday it was committing three penalties in the final frame that hampered the Riders efforts.

“When I look at this game I am extremely frustrated,” lamented Roosevelt Coach Ben Barlow. “We definitely let one slip away tonight that we knew coming in we had to have.”
In a game that was described as “back and forth” by Barlow, the Riders had plenty of opportunities with a total of 36 shots on goal in the game.

Benedictine goalie Zach Martin stopped 35 of those shots.
“Give their kid (Martin) some credit. He hasn’t played that much this year and probably played one of his better games this season. He deserves a lot of credit,” observed Barlow.
Cleveland Benedictine had 21 shots on goal during the contest, all but one of those being turned away by Roosevelt goalie Nate Grootegoed.
Sophomore Dontae Montemayor scored the Rough Riders' lone goal in the game on a power play opportunity at 8:28 of the first period. Kyle Manning and Tom Fisher assisted on the effort.
Cleveland Benedictine’s only tally was credited to senior Vince Carson, with Dennis Robinson assisting on the score at 13:34 of the second period.
In the third period, the Rough Riders’ penalty problems began early as their first
transgression was committed just 21 seconds into the period.
Two additional penalties on the Riders in the final period created further challenges for the team.
“We’re a team that’s trying to learn how to finish games and win games late. That (the penalties) did not help us,” stated Barlow.
“It (penalty killing) takes our flow out; it diminishes what we want to do offensively,” he added.
The Rough Riders could not capitalize on two minutes of a power play opportunity to start the overtime period as neither team scored in the extra period of play.
