Cuyahoga River Lovers Wanted for Annual Clean-Up

Volunteers sought for Aug. 17 event

Volunteers are welcome to help remove trash and debris from the Cuyahoga River during the city’s annual cleanup next month.

Eric Gorczynski, an environmental technician for the city of Kent, said city officials are looking for residents to help in any way they can.

“Anybody that wants to actually get in the river, get wet and get in a boat, bring a boat, kayak canoe or any other way they really want to help,” he said.

This year, the city will hold the cleanup on Aug. 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. The targeted section of the river stretches from John Brown Tannery Park off Stow Street south to where the Cuyahoga River meets Middlebury Road.

In the past, volunteers have removed hundreds of pounds of old tires, metal and other debris from the water by using kayaks, canoes and fishing boats to haul the trash out.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, sun screen, a light snack, water and shoes capable of providing protection from rocks or debris.
