Process over Perfection

Support local creativity this weekend and see an original play written and performed by children! "

The New World Children's Theater is one of the best things about living in Kent with children in my humble opinion. The beauty of this local endeavor is that it is about process not perfection.

Director Jeff Ingram attributes his state of pre-performance calm to the layers of successes already accompished by this young cast and crew. They begin with a writing workshop focusing on creating an original play while learning about character, plot, conflict, climax and resolution.

Once completed, they move on to creating the set and props necessary to tell their story which often involves time travelling or a journey to another dimension. Then they begin rehearsals and the challenging task of learning their lines. This year the members range from age six to thirteen and have spent each night of the past week at the African Community Theater in Oscar Ritchie Hall on Kent State's campus pulling their masterpiece together. There are always worries on opening night from in the hearts of the parents who witnessed the prior evening's dress rehearsal, but as usual they pulled it off with an amazing performance last night. It is a rare opportunity to see an original play written and performed by children and directed by a man who trusts them and their creativity. Here is more info from the Standing Rock Cultural Arts website.

The New World Children’s Theater began as The New World Puppet Theater at the North Water Street Gallery in Kent, Ohio, in January of 1993. Originally, it was comprised of home-school children. Throughout the years , however, it has grown to include public-schooled children as well. Eventually, the troupe outgrew the puppets and the ensemble became The New World Children’s Theater, which has produced 26 plays since 1994. In addition to the emphasis on original play writing, the company is dedicated to using recycled materials in the construction of its sets and props. This fosters an understanding of a sustainable planet as well as an understanding of how to work with limited resources. The only requirement is a creative mind.

The New World Children’s Theatre is always looking for donations to support students from low income families as well as our ongoing activities. Donations are tax deductible and can be made to Standing Rock Cultural Arts, 257 N. Water St., Kent, Ohio 44240."
