LOOK: Dunkin' Donuts New Kent Design

Architecture firm shares latest design for two-story coffee and donuts shop on East Main Street

, the Kent architecture firm designing the Dunkin' Donuts planned for 525 E. Main St., shared the latest design for the two-story shop with Kent Patch.

The project already received and obtained .

But the recent acquisition of the house north of the new building allowed for a new orientation of the building, which was presented this week .

The new design creates a total 11 parking spaces on the site and eliminates the need for a parking variance for the project.

Not bad. Not bad at all. More life to it than the weary design for the new courthouse.
Wade September 6, 2012 at 11:50 am
Take off the DD signage and it looks better than the new courthouse.
Paxton Crenshaw September 6, 2012 at 12:32 pm
Looks like they took the former design and dropped it onto the middle of a Taco Bell.

Across from the KSU Campus.....Do the need all that hoaky signage...No just bad franchise habit the communities dont have to accept.
Do the think students won't find the Dunkin Donuts Shop? Is that Stucco...." Where's the Bricks " it's Kent !
Brian September 6, 2012 at 02:34 pm
It's a shame that the new businesses that want to come into Kent are subjected to "constructive criticism" for design whie existing train wrecks such as Huntington Bank can maintain the ugliest building exterior in the history of Kent.

maybe you could move into the wells sherman house? seems like a good fit!
William B Budner ESQ. September 6, 2012 at 06:23 pm
sounds like karma to me.
Teresa K. September 6, 2012 at 06:44 pm
@sally: Hopefully, you will have a couple months before all the new plans get ironed out. Has the purchase of the needed property gone through the court yet? that takes a month at least and even the crudest of rental agreements, if monthly paid, gives you a month.
How would you have liked living so close to the DD if you were permitted to stay? Good luck to you, Sally. Hopefully someone might see this who has rentals in the area and can offer you ( and others?) a suitable, affordable place. Forewarned is forearmed.... even a little notice- from whatever source -is helpful.
William B Budner ESQ. September 6, 2012 at 07:18 pm
i'm just talking about karma baby. i couldn't care less about the house or property, i'm just talking 'bout karma.
Misty Jones September 6, 2012 at 07:48 pm
This is the issue with renting. If you want to stay somewhere forever, you should purchase a property. The owner can sell to whomever he wants whenever he wants and is not obligated to tell you before it hits the press. That tree, garden, and window belong to the owner not the renter and the owner does not have to ask the individuals who have been using the property how they feel. It's just business. Maybe you can approach the owner and buy the property instead of Dunkin Donuts getting it. Good luck.
Paxton Crenshaw September 6, 2012 at 08:05 pm
the irony, sally, that you're mourning the loss of beautiful trees, bushes and a garden that you tended to on a property that you do not own is not lost on me. i agree with billly bud - it's karma.
Damon Iskennari September 6, 2012 at 08:31 pm
Methinks that is a historic house and worthy of at least $200,000.00 from the city, council, and university to move and preserve.
William B Budner ESQ. September 6, 2012 at 08:42 pm
you hit the nail on the head paxton old buddy.
William B Budner ESQ. September 6, 2012 at 09:06 pm
i'm good! now let's talk doughnuts!
Chris (Kit) Myers September 6, 2012 at 09:37 pm
Budner grovels in peoples' misfortunes. Pay him no heed.
Joseph Hughes September 7, 2012 at 12:09 am
Sally: This is strictly a legal issue. The Dunkin' Donuts is going to go on that land. END OF DISCUSSION.
h September 7, 2012 at 12:46 am
the reality of sally purchasing a property in this economy, when she says she has little savings is not really there.
i do think that with ksu building so much student housing, there will be private rentals coming available that need renters. i assume you will find one. look along middlebury road, i think there are a number of rentals in that area. also other houses in the longmere neighborhood have apartments in the houses. privately owned and off the beaten path, yet still close to kent and all it has to offer. with that said, what kent has to offer is more and more modern design which all seems to be the same.
h September 7, 2012 at 12:47 am
as i was driving home today i was looking at starbucks / bradys cafe and wondering when its fate will fall to a million dollar buyout and a modern concrete mammoth. its sad to me that kent doesnt have more concern over the architectural relevance of a design to the atmosphere of the small town in which those concrete squares are built.
h September 7, 2012 at 12:48 am
did anyone notice a bush or tree in the DD design? yet they will rip up sallys trees which are older than the life span intended for the building they are placing in its spot.
i remember when the bp/mcdonalds took over the marathon gas station in ravenna. the biggest red maple i have seen in years was saved to the last minute and ceremoniously cut down. what a shame it is. its trees that hold together the soil of this earth, not concrete...we will pay for all of this concrete eventually. speaking of paying, isnt there a law about taxation without representation? i read that there are bonds paying for the new architecture school (etc) that will increase the taxes of the residents of kent. i for one am sick of paying taxes for a town that invites hooligans in who make it so that i cannot even make a night deposit at my bank because they have to keep it locked so trash isnt deposited. and the litter along side the road...i had a visitor in town last week comment n that. where are my taxes being used? not to clean up after the brats who we pay to have come spoil our town. of course, those brats are also the life blood of our retail income. catch 22. too bad every student doesnt have to take a course on citizenship while staying in kent.
h September 7, 2012 at 12:48 am
and one last comment, i would never use an attorney or other service oriented hired individual if i knew that they were so openly rude and proud of it.
luckily there are others available who are not so rude, at least publicly. good luck sally and god speed to your garden.
Misty Jones September 7, 2012 at 03:23 am
Godspeed to gardens Ms. Burnell helped destroy as well.
Jim VandenBoom September 9, 2012 at 03:29 am
You hold the same closed minded free market arrogance and the Kent city councils decisions that trumps those that have lived and thrived on those properties.

Paula, While I believe there are truly good people out there who have nothing but the bestRead More intentions for others, this story does not shock nor surprise me. I attended meetings with a friend who was court ordered. They couldn't drive and I figured I would sit with them instead of driving back and forth. AA claims not to be a religious sect but all the meetings and steps center around God. Not that I have a problem with God, but some people don't believe. Our courts (Judges) sentence people to attend meetings for DUI. I find this sad and irresponsible. One, it's religion. Two, you are sending alcoholics in to a group of other alcoholics who are not trained to help people with addiction. AA teaches people they are "helpless and powerless". Really? An individual has to find strength from within to fight the addiction. Telling people they are helpless isn't going to help. Alcoholism is usually tied to mental issues or illness. Going into a room and listening to other people's depressing rock bottom stories made me want to leave and go drink. Paradise Club....... hmmmmmmm...... I am not surprised. The only reason these court ordered sessions continue is that it doesn't cost the court any money. DUI's are a money maker for the courts, police and all the attorney's out there. Ah, but that's another story. I hope there is a happy ending for all of those above and others like them who have suffered under the guise of AA.

Maybe it is just the start to a slow summer or a sign that there is nothing interesting going on inRead More Kent. The story you mentioned turned out to be pretty uneventful and more about a guy making false, not real, threats. The two stories that have seen the most face-time have been KRHS's valedictorian and the med helicopter. Maybe highlight achievements and products of local businesses we don't hear about. Run an interesting historical piece. Not trying to be argumentative but rather making a comment that the information provided as of late has been less than interesting.

The school levy has passed. This is great news for the children of Kent. Thanks to everyone whoRead More voted for the levy.
Jim Williams May 8, 2013 at 02:05 am
Glad to see that 17% of Kent citizens were able to muster the energy to bother voting, and that theRead More majority of those few supported this very important issue. Congrats to the District for making the convincing argument. It's pretty clear that the chorus of "NO" that exists here on Patch is not representative of the majority.

I'm glad the League did their research. Have they ever researched and said: "no, we dont feelRead More the levy is needed?" For most of us, our research need only go as far as our wallets and income. If the schools with their million dollar budgets are feeling the crunch, imagine how average or lower average income homes are struggling. I am very suspect of the excellent w/ distincton rating and the asking of this levy at this time. How were we able to get that kind of incredible rating with NO ADDED FUNDS? Did the teachers wake up last year? Did the kids wake up? How did the school get such superior ratings THAT year and none in previous ones? why such a huge gap in time and ratings? The days of passing every school levy "just because", "we've never said no", "for the kids" or to keep our "property values" are over. The economy took care of that. No matter how you feel about the levy: PLEASE VOTE.
Sa;;y April 25, 2013 at 11:24 pm
I urge my fellow residents to send a message to the school board: The Board needs to face the factRead More of the current economic conditions involving the residents in the Kent city school district and come back with a request for a more reasonable millage. Otherwise, I think the levy will fail. Our city leaders encouraged businesses to come into the new development by granting concessions on taxes. Well, there goes the additional money!
Sue May 7, 2013 at 12:23 pm
Vote YES today for Kent children. Yes on the school levy.
