Spring Forward, Lose Time at the Bars

Daylight Saving Time means clocks roll ahead 1 hour this weekend

Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday, and for many people that simply means you'll turn your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

But for others, say in the college-age crowd, it means something entirely different.

And state liquor officials are making it clear exactly what that different meaning is.

The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control released a statement today reminding liquor permit holders that the change in Daylight Saving Time, starting at 2 a.m., means bar service has to end 30 minutes earlier than a typical Saturday night.

"When the clock strikes 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, the time will spring forward and be, in fact, 3 a.m., 30 minutes past the legal closing time for permit holders who are authorized to operate alcohol sales until 2:30 a.m.,” said Bruce D. Stevenson, superintendent of the liquor control division. "All sales and consumption of alcoholic beverages at those permit premises must cease prior to 2 a.m., when clocks should be advanced one hour."
