So many options for everyone as Kent State University students prepare for finals

As the semester winds down for Kent State students, many options are available this weekend for study breaks and stress reduction.

The public at large, in need of their own breaks and stress reduction, can join in all the fun and entertainment as well.

Why Go: This premier local party band continues to blow people away with horns, guitars and energy. The gray hairs and creaky backs haven't slowed these guys down a bit. Performing since 1986, they've played well over 2,000 shows in more than 40 states and three countries. Don't miss the special slow-smoked pulled-pork BBQ dinner for $9 served at the attached restaurant, .

2. BFA Crafts Exhibition 

Where/When: School of Art Gallery, Art Building, ,

Today, April 29, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tonight, April 29, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Artist Reception.

Why Go: Kent State art students present their work for the faculty to grade and the public to appreciate. Co-op jewelery sale at same location during evening.

Pricing: Free exhibition, but donations accepted.

3. Kent State New Music Series and Student Recitals

Where/When: Ludwig Recital Hall, Music & Speech Building, .

Tonight, April 29, 8 p.m., New Music Series

Saturday, April 30, three recitals – oboe, voice and mezzo-soprano (see schedule)

Sunday, May 1, five recitals – violin, cello, soprano and piano (see schedule)  

Why Go: The New Music Series features The Kent State University New Music Ensemble directed by Frank Wiley. Six recent pieces created within the last 35 years are performed by talented students and faculty. Instruments include amplified flute, piano, alto saxophone, violin, viola, cello, horns, clarinet, oboe and percussion. The Nexus and Aidan string quartets perform. Also witness the premiere of Dreaming of Water (2011) by James Nicholson, which includes poetry and narration. 

The semester-ending student recitals give family, friends, fellow students and the public a chance to see and hear burgeoning musicians perform aural works of beauty.  

Pricing: New Music Series and Recitals all free and open to the public.

4. Weathervane Playhouse: The Nerd

Where/When: Founders Theater, Weathervane Playhouse, 1301 Weathervane Lane, Akron.

Show opened Thursday and runs until May 15

Friday, April 29, 8 p.m.

Saturday, April 30, 8 p.m.

Sunday, May 1, 2:30 p.m.

Why Go: A comedy by Larry Shue. The story about a nerdy visitor who once saved a man's life, but then later overstays his welcome. Directed by Rohn Thomas.

5. Guy Davis

Where/When: Happy Days Visitors Center, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Peninsula, OH

Saturday, April 30, 8 p.m.

Why Go: This critically acclaimed musician is respected for his works on traditional acoustic blues guitar. He's also a successful actor, composer, director and writer. Davis uses traditional blues standards, originals and storytelling in his performances. Show sponsors include 89.7 WKSU.

Pricing: $17 Adults, $5 for ages 12 and under

6. Cleveland Indians baseball

Where/When: Progressive Field, 2401 Ontario St. downtown Cleveland

Friday, April 29, 7:05 p.m. – Fireworks and half-price tickets for students

Saturday, April 30, 6:05 p.m. – Fireworks

Sunday, May 1, 1:05 p.m. – Kids 12 and under can run bases after game

Why Go: Your Cleveland Indians are still in first place with one of the best records in the American League. They battle the Detroit Tigers all weekend. Pick from two nights of fireworks. Take advantage of cheap seats for high school and college students with ID on Friday. If you have children 12 or under, an unforgettable run around the bases awaits them on Sunday.
