Get Out: Kent State Dedicates Student Theater and More This Weekend

Aspiring actors perform in new campus theater and Sonny Geraci brings his hits to The Kent Stage

Watch talented student thespians at Kent State dedicate a new black-box campus theater today, or see models showcase student fashion designs made from roofing shingles in this week's edition of "Get Out."

Or, you can listen to 1960s icon Sonny Geraci perform some of his classics and help him raise money at The Kent Stage.

Wander along the Kent State Esplanade with the artists who created some of the sculptures there, go to an outdoor celebration or, if you're willing, take part in a local trash pick-up dedicated to the upcoming Earth Day.

Whatever you do, the weather's getting warmer, so take off your coat and step out into Kent this weekend.

Where/When: Roe Green Center for the School of Theatre and Dance, KSU campus,

Tonight, April 8th, 7:15 p.m.

Why Go: Student actors officially break the seal on this new space, referred to as the "EZ Theatre." Dedication ceremonies in the lobby are followed by the annual Student Theatre Festival and the special tribute Lou and Bill, directed by Lou's son Karl Erdmann of Kent State and Porthouse Theatre.

2. Kent State Fashion Show Fundraiser: Building Fashion 2011

Where/When: , Kent State campus,

Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Students from the Kent State School of Fashion Design and Merchandising were tasked with forming fashion pieces from unique materials like duct tape, roofing shingles, old T-shirts, color swatches and other non-traditional items. Models strut the catwalk in these interesting creations to be rated by a panel of local judges. Event proceeds go to the host, Kent State Habitat for Humanity.

3. Sonny Geraci:

Where/When: ,

Sunday, 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: As the former frontman for The Outsiders and Climax, Geraci had several Top 40 Hits including Time Won't Let Me and Precious and Few. Opening performers include Dennis Tufano and the Vogues. Both shows are fundraisers to offset costs for Streetsboro Family Days, where Geraci has performed each year.

4. - BBQ! Music!

Where/When: , Temple Ave., Kent,

Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: This wonderful local market holds an outdoor celebration for the coming of spring with music and food off the grill. Area vendors set up booths full of food, beverages and homemade products for sale. There will be musical performances by the Johnson Family String Band and Vagrant Revival.

Pricing: Free and open to the public. Free parking.  

5. Earth Day 2011 Trash Pick-up

Where/When: Downtown Kent Gazebo, corner of Franklin Avenue and Main Street Saturday, 11:30 a.m.

Why Go: Enjoy the outdoors and help rid your community of all that leftover stuff the snow was hiding. This annual event is organized by the Kent Human Service Management Student Organization. Volunteers will be given gloves and trash bags to gather up trash and debris around town. Participants will also be provided with free food and refreshments.

Pricing: Free and open to the public.

6. Kent State Sculpture Walk Dedication and Tour

Where/When: Kiva and University Esplanade,

Wednesday, April 13, 10 a.m.

Why Go: Enjoy the official dedication of the public sculptures recently placed along the pathway that winds through the Kent State campus toward downtown Kent. There will be a slideshow featuring the public art and comments from four of the artists who created these works along the University Esplanade. After the slideshow, all attendees are encouraged to tour the sculptures with the artists for further discussion, weather permitting.
